Hi, I am a new 8n owner, I got the tractor running and it runs great now, but I can't engage the pto.

What happens when I try is I hear a click like it engages, then it spins when I release the clutch but when slowly stops spining, also the pto will stop quickly if a load is placed on it. If I hold the pto lever hard in the engage position it seems to stay engaged but I have not yet put a real work load on it to see if it would stay engaged.

I pulled the inspection plate off and everything seems OK. Anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem?

thanks in advance

Back/pull up on car ramps  Everyone has a set right if NO why not....

The plastic set (12K rated and believe me they will hole more) is money well spent... I did drive one down a steep bank beside the shop for the \ell of it to swap the shaft,,, lucky me got a new shaft that would not go back in with out modifications...

If you pull the PTO shaft out on level ground, you will also get a fair amount of oil dumped with it. I would suggest driving the tractor over to a ditch and park it nose-down. Then the oil will collect in the front and you can remove the four bolts and the PTO shaft should pull straight out with no oil. Mine have always resisted being pulled out a bit, but there is nothing else to remove/release to get it out. Just give it a good tug!

Otherwise you will need to drain your hydraulic fluid prior to removing the shaft. And you may want to use this opportunity to change the fluid anyway!

" I would suggest driving the tractor over to a ditch and park it nose-down. Then the oil will collect in the front"

I could do that w/ my N's because I have replaced the transmission seal. If you have an old or leaky seal, all that fluid is going to fill up the bell housing & soak the clutch.

I just take the extra 5 minutes & drain the fluid.

Thanks, I pushed and pulled on the PTO as you suggested and there is 1/2 inch of play. Is that bad? OK, I already know the answer, so I have to take out the PTO? Ugk, that sounds like work. Oh well, it was a free tractor so I should not complain to much. thanks for the help.

that's alot of thrust play. most likely a popped retainer ring.. though could be bad bearing.. slipped wear ring and or bad bearing carrier.

hopefully you have not let this go on too long so that the sliding coupler is not damaged and the pto shaft end is not mushroomed from beating in and out..

repalce the seal.. and bearing and wear ring if needed. do the seal just because...

The friend that gave me the tractor was drilling post holes with an auger and something went wrong and the PTO jammed up. He told me that he thought the PTO lever was just stuck. He just moved to a new house and does have a place to keep the tractor so rather then see it turn to rust he gave it do me. Soon I will make room for in my garage. I live right on Galveston Bay (Texas) so I want it inside before the north wind starts blowing salt water on it.

Pulling the shaft is no big deal really. Remove 4 bolts and she should come right out.

Push and pull on the end of the PTO shaft. It should not move in and out. If it does you will need to pull it out and determine what is loose.

Sometimes the bearing snap ring get dislodged and the bearing moves in and out of the houshing and other times the collar that locks the bearing in place on the shaft moves and must be put back where it belongs, holding the bearing in place.

Good idea to replace the seal while you have it off.
