Need help, I recently purchased a 1948-49 ford tractor. The serial number on the tractor is 9n 223264. can you tell me if this is a 8n or 9n tractor. it runs good and has a 4 speed transmission. |

| hey thanks for the help. i installed new fuel line today and took it out for test drive and when i put it in 4th gear and opened the throttle the front wheels start wobbling. i have never had it in high before. how do i go about getting the sloppy play out of the steering wheel and to get the tires to run straight. thanks you have been a big help already. |

| | " how do i go about getting the sloppy play out of the steering wheel and to get the tires to run straight. " It probably has a number of problems. Start by jacking up the front end. Grab the top & bottom of the tire. If it rocks, you have a bearing problem. Move on down the steering gear toward the steering box. Start at the steering arm/tie rod ends at the front axle. Twist, turn & move them looking for slop. Then do the same thing on the Pitman arm end of the tie rods. If you find problems there (and you probably will) start replacing parts. The steering gear problems & adjustments are a bit more difficult to address because of the different steering boxes. Go to John Smiths site & ID the box. Start another thread by describing the precise problem along w/ the ID of the steering box. |

| | If it indeed does have a 4 speed transmission (meaning 4 forward gears & 1 reverse) and both brake pedals are on the right side, then it's an 8N chassis. If the s/n on the engine starts w/ 9N, it's a 9N engine. s/n 9N 223,264 makes it a 1946 engine. The key thing you need to know to order most parts is if it has a 6v or 12v ignition system & if the distributor is on the front or side of the engine. If it is a 9N engine, the distributor is on the front. John Smith's website can help you ID it better: http://www.oldfordtractors.com/idhistory.htm Check out tip # 39 for suggestions on the manuals you will need. |

| | " HOW HARD IS IT TO REMOVE THE HOOD " First, can you turn the caps lock off, pls? It's hard to read. Removing the hood is easy......but if you are doing that to get to the distributor, you don't need to remove the hood. Is that what you are trying to do? |

| After you get the 4 bolts off of the dash, remove the wire going to the head lights. Then, w/ the gas off, unscrew the fuel line at the carb. If the tank is full, you should drain the gas out. Then, get a couple of saw horses to put the hood on when you get it off. Remove the two bolts at the bottom of the dog legs. The grill is held in place by to hinges at the top & the dog legs at the bottom. After the dog leg bolts are out, the grill will fall out.....usually on your foot. Pull the hood forward about an inch, then up to clear the radiator neck. It should be easy after that. A helper makes it much easier. |

| | Yep. But don't buy a new radiator or water pump. Lots of junk out there. Get your rebuilt. Even if it costs more than "new". Hopefully you have local shops for both. If not, these guys do 'mail order' work for water pumps; give them a call to get a quote & shipping info. And, they also do carbs, starters, generators, brakes, clutches, etc. Automotive Manufacturers Incorporated 2400 N Lombardy St Richmond, VA 23220 (804) 321-6861 The radiator is held in place by the top hose & two carriage bolts at the bottom. Remove the nuts off of the bolts; the radiator will swing out (not lift off) like a door. While it's off, go ahead & replace the hoses & the t-stat (check out tip # 25, below) When you put it back together, make sure you place the top radiator hose at the same position it was on the top inlet; if you push it up too far, it will pull the radiator back & you will never get the hood on. Don’t ask……….. |

Serial number 9N223264 would make it a 1946 Ford 2N, but since it has a 4 speed transmission I would say that you have a Ford 8N with a 1946 Ford 2N engine. Are you sure that the serial number has 9N at the beginning and not 8N? |

| PLEASE TURN OFF THE CAP LOCK. If the lead wires to the AMP meter have been cut off the it will not work! Google "JMOR wiring diagrams" and you will find a wiring diagram suitable for your tractor that shows how to include the ammeter. |
