I was putting on the flywheel bolts today and as I had my torque wrench on them I noticed that the last one I was doing just kept on turning. My heart naturally sank because I knew what was going on. I tried and tried to get it back out but can not. I had to take a break after 4 hours of messing with it. I"m at the moment trying to cut the head off so i can pound it out the other end. By the why the bolt is as loose as can me it is so chewed up however it will not come out.. My main question is what do i do after i get the bolt out? How can a fix the threads in the crankshaft? The other 3 may be able to be tapped, but the stubborn one there is no way. I think what happened (why they stripped) is they went threw and actually touched the back of the oil pan. When that happed they had no where to go and stripped they go. Why this happened I don"t know. Please help!! Open to any ideas I posted some pictures as well..

Grade 5 or 8 - either is adequate.

Run a short bolt in and tighten it up - if the threads hold you are good to go. Might have been bad threads on the bolt not the crankshaft. The crankshaft is not hard and can be easily drilled. I don't like helicoils and prefer a soild thread repair insert if possible. A lot cheaper too - uses a standard tap/drill combo and no installation tool required.

I think I'll be ok with the threads in the crank, but the bolts are a different story. Dumb question what kind of grade bolt should i use? Grade 8?? Or is there something better?

Pry out on the flywheel while turning the bolt is the best idea I see here.

once you get it out, use the helicoil. i had the same thing happen to me last year when i replaced my clutch. i"m happy to say this works very well!

I was able to get it out. I ran a tap threw the threads and to my surprise it dont look to bad. A bolt will go in there but Im not sure if the threads wills handle it when I make it tight. I just can't figre out why the bolt went so far in to where it hit the oil pan then since it had no place to go it stripped. I'll have to use a washer on all the bolts for sure to take up some space. Do you remeber if it was hard to drill the hole in the crank? Seems tough!! What size helicoil did you get and where did you get it? thanks!

I don't know what that four hole plate is. Wsa it on the crankshaft? I would use an angle grinder to cut the head off the bolt, leave the bolt in the crank and use only three bolts to replace the flywheel. There are dowels on the crankshaft that will hole it. You know Henry over built everything so should be know problem.

Jason1Pa ,Don't cut the head off of it.Turn the crankshaft till the striped flywheel bolt is directly behind the starter hole .Then put a pry bar through the starter hole against the fly wheel. Then with the three bolts removed ,put a impact or a ratchet on the striped bolt and turn it out while prying on the flywheel till it comes off. Then get a helicoil thread repair for the crankshaft and 4 new grade 8 bolts the correct length.

I would NOT cut the head off of it. If it is spinning in the hole how are you going to drill it??
Use a wonder bar or cat's paw nail puller and pull it out that way. Or weld a piece of steel to the head so you can get two bars under it.
Then do as TOH says and redrill, retap it for a helicoil.

Once you get the head off try using on easy out, a kind of left handed drill as previously mentioned. You will need to drill a small hole in the stud, use a center punch and make sure it's dead nuts center.

That don't work, drill out the whole thing and use an insert. Got one in my block and torqued just fine. most local auto parts store have em.

Get a left handed drill bit to drill it out with. The drill itself may bring it out.

Another pic with the stuck bolt

Use a pair of vice-grips to pull the bolt outwards while you unscrew it. If that doesn't work grind the head off and drill the damaged stub out. Repair the crankshaft threads using thread repair inserts. I'd suggest self locking inserts like these:

Item #90259A158 - 7/16-20 x 9/16-12 self locking thread repair insert
