All-
Just ridin and mowin with my 2N when the hydraulics decides to not work. Not work in the sense that the 3 point hitch stays in the up position now and will only drop after turning the tractor off and setting setting for 20 minutes. I will then fire the tractor back up, and engage the pto and it will go back up to the furthest upward postition it can. The control lever now acts like it is spring operated when i try and move the lever down. It springs backup to the middle and will not operate. Any ideas?

As a rule of thumb for an N, it's probably a sticky exhaust valve. Remove the inspection plate w/ the dipstick, reach in & push the control rod to the rear. If the lift drops, you found the problem.

This is a classic symptom of a dirty pump.

Have you ever dropped the pump, cleaned out the sump & changed the fluid? Might be time to do that.

yer 2n will have a t valve. a lil different setup than an 8n.. but functions just about the same with different linkages. sometimes the linkages come off the t valve.

look and post back

Well I took the time to drop the pump and inspect the system since the tractor was new to me 1 year ago. I found a very dirty sump with 1/2" of dirt and gunk which had poluted the hydraulic system. I completely cleaned the entire area with carb cleaner. I took the pump apart and cleaned it all thoroughly. While I had it apart, I also replaced the hydraulic overload pressure switch and T valve. Put it back together and wouldn't ya know, it worked perfectly. Thanks for the replies and the 50 TIPS. God Bless.

sticky gritty control valves are a common problem in an abused N sump..
