I was not very clear in my first message, and I apologize for that. I have an 8N with a 6 volt system and a front mount distributor. What"s really happening is, when I let up on the starter button the engine dies. If I continue to hold the starter button down the engine keeps running. Could I have a wire on the wrong connector or a bad starter button? Thanks again, Basil |

| | Assuming you have an OEM solenoid & key switch.......... You wired the solenoid wrong. The small post on the side of the solenoid has a wire from the thumb switch. The rear (drivers side) of the solenoid has the negative cable from the battery AND the wire to the ammeter & terminal block. You have the wire from the ammeter on the wrong side of the solenoid. Wiring diagrams are a real help. |

| Hi Bruce, you are right on. Changed the amp. wire to the rear side of the solenoid and wham bam the engine keeps running when I let up on the push button starter. Thanks so much, and thanks also to everyone that tried to help with my problem. Basil |

| Basil.........the 8N's 3-terminal starter solenoid operated by grounding the little middle terminal by the BIG starter button by the tranny shifter. Many neubie shadetree mechanics incorrectly install the starter solenoid so the little middle terminal is eazy to gitt too. Install the starter solenoid so the little middle terminal faces the engine block and hard to gitt to. .........Dell |

| Thanks Dell, the solenoid is installed correctly. The little terminal is facing the engine block.Basil |

| Sounds like you have a wire on wrong some place like maybe the ignition power getting power from the starter side of the solenoid instead of the battery side or if you have the wrong solenoid on it or even the right solenoid on it but wired back wards as in the starter and battery side wrong |

| You have something wired wrong. I would look at the relay on the starter. One samller wire should be hot to the ignition switch and the other to the starter button. Plus the batter cable.
Sounds like while you are pushing the starter button you are also energizing the ignition and when you release it you are killing the power to it.

| Hi Rick, are you saying I need to run a wire from the starter solenoid to the ignition switch then to the starter button? Right now I have only one wire that goes from the starter button directly to the starter solenoid. |

| a bad ballast resistor will do that |

| Sorry no a ballast resister on a N series will not do that because there is no by pass on them like on the older Dodge cars and trucks the resister is a thermistor as in the longer the engine runs the high the resistance get to a point and will not cause his problem. |
