I committed to buying a 1957 Ford 600. It is a 4 speed not a selectospeed. I has been sitting a long time. It is complete and the engine is free. It has a nice Freeman Loader and one newish rear tire and rim. When I get it home I will post pictures. I would like to know where I should start. This machine will be a user not a show tractor. Got some super advice here a couple years ago on my 8n. I still have the 8n but winter is coming and I thought this 600 would be some good company, Any advice would be great. |

| in addition to the good advice given,
if it was outside,
loosen ALL the oil drain plugs just enough to drain the
water out.
(water will come out first- recent Farmall I did, got
2-3 gallons of water out of the rear before oil started coming out)
Drain the engine oil and change it and the filter before
starting. cheapest oil you can find, as after you get it running/warm,
change it again with the good stuff.
Up to you, but on engines with easy oil pans like your 640's 134,
I drop the oil pan before the first start to take a look and clean out the muck.
I also routinely take the carb apart and at
least clean it on non-runners, even if I don't have a kit. On one that has been sitting,
they always have either varnish or rust in em.
While it's soaking, check everywhere for critter nests, exhaust, air cleaner,
up under the dash on the wiring, etc
640 is a very nice machine, after you get it sorted out and running....
next time you get on your N...you'll be asking 'what's wrong with this thing' :D

| I'm curious what you meant by Brand New. You mean new to you maybe? Both of my tractors are Brand New. Not restored, not rebuilt. Brand New! One is a 73 the other a 76. |

It couldn't be a Select-O-Speed anyway. The Select-O-Speed didn't come out until 1959.

| Well if it sat for 6 plus months fill the cylinders with ATF and let it sit a few days. Also if the exhaust if an up right type pour as much ATF down it that you can to the point it runs out. Doing that will free up sticking rings and sticking valves. Then after say 3-5 days pull the plugs out and let the ATF drain then spin it over. Yes your getting ready to make a mess so be sure you do that where it will not matter much. Then do the normal spark test etc |
