My 8N has ran great for the last few years. Now I have trouble,it quit running.I tried to jump start it after I ran the battery down.It is a 12V Neg ground system. When I try to jump it it will turn over real slow but will not start. All the terminals have been cleaned one wire at a time.I noticed while trying to start the Neg cable from Bat to Grd gets warm is this normal? Any help on what to check will be appreciated.I am a novice when it cames to finding trouble. |

6 volt solenoid and starter should work just fine on 12 volts, but if you are having a problem with slow cranking and the ground cable getting hot I would sure check the ground where cable is bolted to frame. cable should not get hot and starter should not be slow but only you can tell what is slow. |

| The wires and cap "may" have caused it to quit running since they are part of the ignition circuit, but they would not cause the slow cranking condition.
A good auto parts place or starter rebuild shop could test the starter for you and it's usually free. |

| I took the plug out of bottom of carb gas ran out I let it run for about a minute,so I assume the fuel system is okay. The spark plugs have only been in about a month,of course that does not mean they could be bad will check them when our 100 degree heat wave is over.In checking things over I found a couple of plug wires that had some insulation missing I taped them, also the dist cap has a piece of plastic (or whatever it is missing from one side where the plug goes in hole, could this two things cause the problem, any way I have them ordered.I am wondering if the starter could be causing all the problem, the reason I ask is every since I have had the tractor every once in awhile the starter will hang up.I have to take out the starter and put it back in and the tractor will start right up.I have a brand new 12V to put in,now the tractor has the orginal 6V starter even though the tractor has been converted to 12V.Now I am guessing that it has a 6V Solenoid,I was told that I will have to put a 12V Solenoid on the starter. Is this correct? I was told that 6V starters were left in 12V conversions because they start quick.Again thanks for your help. |

I usually just hook one cable to the battery and the other to ground. Going direct to the starter stud will bypass the neutral saftey switch , which is also unsafe. Machines do require us to think a bit about what we are doing. I guess the best place would be the battery side of the start relay if there is one. |

Bruce, I must disagree with you on this one. If you are only jumping to the starter then yes you would be right but if you are hooking jumper cables to the battery terminials, then it should start as the jumping battery would power the ignition circuit.
If he is seeing a slow cranking speed with jumping then I would expect a bad conection or bad starter or starter ground. |

| | " if you are hooking jumper cables to the battery terminials," Sure, that will work, but it's dangerous. Even more so on an N w/ the tight space for the cables. I never hook both cables to any battery. and, on an N, it's so easy to use the starter lug. And much safer. (tip # 43) |

| | " I tried to jump start it after I ran the battery down" If the battery in the tractor is dead, it will not start no matter what you jump it with. You need a charged battery in the tractor to power the ignition circuit. Charge the battery. While you are waiting for it to charge, check out the link Harold provided. |

| This comes up once a day. You need to determine if it is spark or fuel. Most likely spark but check it out. |
