49 8N - 6 volt, side mount dist. Here is what I"ve done so far:

check spark - have spark - bright blue
check fuel - have fuel - flowing from carb
cleaned carb
cleaned points

At a lost of where to go from here. It"s turning over and sounds like it wants to fire, but doesn"t.

Any suggestions.

had it been running and stopped.. or is this one that's been down a while?

if down a while? have you checked compression?

also.. did you set points at .025 ?

post back

Yes, the points are at .025. I haven"t checked the compression other then sticking my finger over the hole and getting it blown off the engine.

The guy that has been working on it took the dist. off and I think he messed with the timing. How do you set the timing on the side mount dist? Thanks!

i;d get her to comp stroke and top dc on 1 and then get the dizzy lined up with rotor near tower.. then dink with dizzy back and forth opening and closing points till you get close enough to finish with a light or by ear.

" check spark - have spark - bright blue"

The color doesn't matter; it's the distance the spark jumps that counts.

Will it jump a 1/4" gap?

Clean the plugs as Harold said. While you're doing that, charge the battery. (or jump it; see tip # 43)

You need a strong battery to:

1. Close the solenoid

2. Spin the starter

3. Engage the bendix

4. Provide voltage to the coil.

As the battery gets weaker, the first thing to fail is your spark. If the battery is almost totally dead, all you will hear is the solenoid clicking.

49 8N side mount???

What's the condition of the plugs. If fouled with gas, they need to be replaced or cleaned. You can clean them with a propane torch.

And the 1950 8N could have a front or side distributor.

Which does your tractor have?
