I am an 8N newbie and I forgot the turn the fuel valve off when I got off the tractor on Saturday. When I walked into my shop this morning there was a large puddle of fuel on the ground under the tractor. I started the motor late in the day and I ran it for less than two minutes and then it stopped and would not start up again. Now what? |

| | You have two problems. (maybe 3) You forgot to turn the gas off (tip # 9) or the sediment bowl valve is bad, and you have a bad float, needle valve/seat or some trash causing it to stick. Check the oil. If you have gas in the oil, drain it, add new oil & change the filter. Then, make sure the sediment bowl valve works. With the gas turned off, remove the fuel line from the carb & put a bucket under it. If you find gas in the bucket after 24 hours, the valve is bad. If not, it was operator error! :) Turn the gas off. You also have a sticking float or bad needle valve or seat in the carb. And a possible third problem is that it could be out of gas. If it won't start, post back for more info on that. This is one of the things that can happen if oil gets in the gas: We just had an 8N in the shop that the owner wanted us to fix the carb leak and replace the starter because the engine wouldn"t turn over. Turns out the base had more gas in it than oil and the bearings didn"t get enough lube from the diluted oil and seized the engine. I think of that tractor every time I park my tractors now and don"t forget to shut the fuel off. (YT Post 10/10/07) |

| Thanks for the help. I changed the oil and filter, re-filled the gas and it fired right up. |

| | The fuel is leaking because your carb float is not functioning. It's a common problem and most of us shut the fuel off after we're done using the tractor. Saves fuel and sometimes can prevent fuel accidentally getting into the oil pan and ruining the oil. The no start issue could also be carb/fuel related, but it could also be electrical. Check for spark at the plugs first. Post back in a new thread. Also let us know if you have a 6v or 12v system and whether you have a front mount distributor or a side mount distributor. Colin, MN |

| | Did you check the oil before you started the tractor? The gas can fill the intake to the point that the gas gets into the cylinders and leaks by the rings putting gas into the base and gas is not a lubricant and will seize the engine. So does it not start or not turn over? Mark |

| I did not check the oil before I started. However, the motor turns, but will not start. I checked the oil this morning and there is no odor of gas on the dipstick. I plan on changing it tonight just to be safe. |
