I just got my 2n delivered and everything looks really good on it but the right side brakes. I have to stand on it to stop. THe left of course is really tight. I have never torn into these brakes. Is there an adjustment or should I just plan ona complete rebuild? Is this going to be a real difficult job for a novice?

Thank you

the thing i dont see mentioned here is besides the adjustment bolt, , most brake problems on the N are caused by gear lube leaking out of the axle seals onto the brake shoes, is there lube around the inside of the brakedrum/ axle tube area? if so thats whats wrong, youll need to pull it down and clean everything up if the shoes are good you can clean them and lightly sand them and theyll work, if you dont have a service manuel yet, id order one from this site, the folks here can talk you thru the job when you get to it, but you'll be amazed at how easy repairs and mantenence are on the N if you just know the "little things" you need to do to do the job, its well worth the money to get the manuel , i dont currently have a N i do have the manuels though, have a NAA jubilee, but i have refurbished 6 N"s for people i know, and, now found out that there was a unspoken lifetime warranty that came with every one of them, the owners lifetime, lol, the N's visit from time to time, "because this made a noise" and the manuel sure is handy

Brett, you ask "any special tools" ... I would invest in a set brake of sping tools, you can find them at any auto parts store and they will make your life alot easier. You may find one of the hardest parts of this job is getting the wheel center off the hub, mine was frozen prety good and took some PB blaster and a BFhammer. Also be and the look out for leaking seals (very common) and fix them before replacing brakes or you'll just be going back in there again. The axel and drum will all come off the trumpet as one and is kind of heavy so be prepared of that too. Good luck and if you get stuck post back. Dan

I was looking on ebay at the different brake spring tools. THere are different versions. Would you be able to send me a picture of yours that you use. I haven't torn into it yet and I don't like to until I have some kind of idea what I am getting into. My email is probably easier to send a picture. Whenever you would have a chance. blhelmkamp@embarqmail.com. Thank you very much I appreciate the help.

Brett, should be able to get those pics tomorrow. I got mine at autozone...pretty cheap but they worked fine for me. You might also want to go to ntractor.com/howtos and check out the section 9n brake replacement...got some good advice and pics there... Dan

If you're not in too big a hurry you might want to wait to order the parts until you get it all apart. I do that so I place fewer orders and save on shipping...Dan

The very first thing is to check the adjustment at the square head adjustment screw at the backing plate. Refer to the owners manual or FO4 manual for how to do this. If you can't improve things with the external adjustment, you will have to dig deeper.

see a couple of pages down to BigDanT and his job replacing brakes. You will find a lot of help here. But I wouldn't try it without the FO-4 manual in front of me.

What kind of tools are needed? Any special tools. Do I just get a whole rebuild kit or just a basic or just pads? Or won't know til I open it?
