OK, so here is the current situation with my tractor:
1. Checked spark at all spark plugs with wide gapped plug - strong bright spark and tractor actually nearly fired up and ran on 3 cylinders.
2. New distr cap, checked timing (I have NOT changed out points as they looked good but cleaned them and gapped to 015 for front mount.
Tractor will start up great from cold. Idles good but as you increase rpm it starts to run rough and misfire with an occasional pop.
I have good fuel flow through carb.
If I run the tractor at higher rpm and turn the main screw on the carb inwards to lean out? It will actually run smoother - but then at low rpm I have the misfire/sputtering.
I took it for a run around the pasture and on the level it runs good - as soon as I get to a slope it starts to run rough, misfire and pop bad and at one point actually stopped, then picked up again and was able to limp home.
I have checked all connections - the last thing I am working on is the connection to the ballast resistor - this had some screw wire nuts to connect wires where a connector was put on - I am removing these and putting on crimp connector so there is no wire nut there.
I am also going to get a new set of points and put those in but not sure if that really is the problem.
If there was poor connection to ballast resistor (corrosion in connection where wire nuts were) would this affect anything.
Finally I am going to throw myself at Garys feet and beg for mercy for messing with the carb so much I dont know how to re-calibrate it.
Here is video for what it is worth its hard to hear the issue but at higher rpm sounds poppy and has an occasional misfire

And finally I have checked the wires from the distributor to the plugs at least 10 times and I am certain they are correct - 1 to first plug (nearest radiator) the number on the distributor cap correlates to the plug on the engine with 4 going to 4 and so on with 4 at back.

| definitely isn't hitting on all 4 at pretty much any time in the video.
Read Bruce's and others ignition posts and keep after it til it's perfect.
If that was one of Gary's carbs, have him walk you thru putting it back
the way he had it and leave it. Once these carbs are clean and set right, you very rarely have to touch them.
Engine seemed to be laboring even at idle, so plugs, points, timing would be my
first look.
And like Jim said, have a new set of plugs handy.
After you get it running right, clean the dirty ones in the running engine.
When you get it done, it will start instantly even on 3 cyl, 2 cyl.
I had one start and run on 1 cylinder once when the rotor broke. |

| You can still have a fouled plug (carbon chip or gas-soaked) and get a good test spark. Everything you described can be caused by a fouled plug, so get the engine stumbling and short out each plug, the one that doesn't change the rough sound will be the one fouled. Take it out (or take them all out) and clean it (them), and retry. What you're describing has happened to me several times over the years. And why would you adjust the carb settings when they were just working fine before the trouble? My carb settings have not been adjusted in at least 15 years. |

| sounds to me like you have plugged passages in your carb, even if you did try to clean them. they can be a real pain to get clean, especialy if they have some hard rust or something solid in them. |
