12v conversion. belt problem

I am converting my late 8n with side distributor over to 12 v. I have the three alternator brackets all mounted as follows:

10303 Bottom bracket bolted to original Gen bracket tabs.

10302 mounted to front of 10303 then up to water pump tab.

10304 bolted to top of 10302 then out to alt adjusting tab.

My problem is the alternator hangs out quite a ways. The top bracket 10304 is 6 inches long. I either need a longer bracket like 8 inches long to reach the alternator adjusting tab or a shorter belt, or a bigger pulley. The pulley is 2.5 inch dia. and the belt grove is correct for the 5/8 size belt.
So my question is should I have to downsize my belt length from the original length or get a longer top adjusting bracket and let the Alternator hang way out. Or am I missing something obvious. Thanks in advance for the sagely advice guys.

This is the way my 12 volt alternator looked after the conversion. I have since removed the alternator and went back to a 12 volt generator that looks like a 6 volt system. Yes, it does hang out there waiting for something to snag on it. You have to pivot the bottom alternator bracket so the alternator extends as far it will go to tighten the belt. You might have to get a different bracket like the one in the second picture that connects the alternator to the governor bracket. This little you ca buy on ebay for about $6.00 or abouts.

Heres a picture of my 2N 12 volt genny mount (home made). Replaced a Delco alternator. Shorter belt, smaller pulley from electric motor service, bored out, makes tight in and high (No tie rod hitting it.
Ford 600, Denso alternator (smaller OD) left side, smaller pulley, 1 inch strap steel, with angle in it, to get over top of alternator, from block, Long bolts and washers for spacer, to line all up with waterpump.
