47 Ford 8N / tranny locked up ( any ideas

Hello all ,
I am new and dont know if i am doing this right or not, but here we go !!
The shifter on top of the tranny feel apart from age or something and some peices got jamed up in the tranny gears or slide rails or something

She starts and runs like a dream , just wont move , clutch works fine , for the peices i can not get the tranny to unlock or freeup and can not move it for its in gear or between gears

any ideas to hepl [revent a sepparation of the rearend from the tranny ??
 
Well first off your tractor is a 1948 8N ya could have been built in 47 but still called a 48. Ya I always tell people because the 8 came from the model year of the N series tractors. Now to the transmission problem. Are you saying you can start the tractor if you have the clutch pushed down but it stalls if you let up on it?? Or are you saying it just does not move and you can not seem to get it in any gear?? From the way you say things it does not seem to make sense.
If it stalls then you probably have it in more then one gear at the same time and you need to pull the top off the transmission. If it is you can not seem to get it in any gear but can let up clutch then you may have a problem in the rear end

okay , i knew i should of told all so here we go

the events: i was driving the 8N & useing it to scrap the frozen windrow that the plowtruck left / i had already done 2 driveways / all is good

i pull in to shift from 1st to reverse / com to a stop & go to slide over to shift into reverse and the shifter comes out of the topplate (dam) and i here a click ,click click (double dam)

so i work the shifter back into the top plate ( it wont move !! (dam !!) so i turn let out on the clutch to see what would happen (the engine lugs down as if the brakes are on

so i shut it down and jack up the rearend and test to see if the wheels turn ( nope , locked )

so i remove the shifter & topplate / no parts visible / shifter pressure retainer spring still their !!

so i drain the tranny and chunks of shifter retainer parts / but not enough to make the descibed parts needed to do the job (humm

so the engine & clutch are fine , tranny has junk in it , rearend act as if it wants to work but can not because of the tranny being jamed / locked between gears
 
Pretty simple fix unless you have broken gears in it. You have it stuck in more then one gear and you need to move the shifter rail so that it is not in any gear and fix the shifter so it does not come out of the top plate and reinstall cover and you should be good to go. Common to have some junk in side since the fluid in the 8N is for the transmission/hyds/rear end and you have 3 drains one fill
