12 volt conversion pulley

Attemped to convert to 12 volts using the GM alt. The origional 8n pulley is too deep for the short shaft on the new GM alt. What pulley has everyone been buying to complete this conversion, or do I need to go back to the parts store and get a different alt with a longer shaft?

I have never had a problem with the gen pulley on an alternator but on some you have to remove the fan spacer that is on the alternator to install the gen pulley on them since the gen pulley has the spacer built in to some of them

i ran for years with a 1/2" belt on my TO-30 with an alterntor while the fan and crankshaft pulley are 5/8". I had to constantly adjust the belt tension.
Finally switched over to a 5/8" pulley from Genesee Products(~$20 plus shpg) and replaced the belt with a 5/8" o and I haven"t had to adjust the belt tension since. That pulley fit on my 10Si alternator with the fan.

the one I fabbed up on a sunday afternoon is still on my 2n ugly weld and all--I took off the alternator pulley. and welded a cone shaped washer from an office chair to the outer edge. needed the tractor and that is what I had on hand. wonder why farmerized is a term in common use? it works really well by the way. I believe this site and others sell the pulley you need.

I have posted the part number for the correct pulley in this post... Google the part #

Here is a picture of part of an article in the "N-News" magazine (volume 18, number 2 Spring 2003), entitled "A slightly different 12 volt conversion for the 9" by Phil Christiansen.
It pictures the Nippon Denso alternator, with custom brackets attached and v-belt pulley, plus wiring diagram. I bougt a 65 amp denso alternator from the junk yard. Then I bought a right size width v belt pulley,at the electric motor shop and had a machine shop, counter bore deep enough to get the nut on the alternator pulley, and wide enough to tighten with a socket. Works good.
Converters should remember that my 65 amp denso alternator, will FRY existing low amp wires in an N and therfore thet need to fuse the alternator output wire to about 30 amps.
On my 12 volt generator conversion pulley my electric motor shop carriews a 2 peice pulley. The inter part is for the size shaft and the second part is the slip on right size v-belt width and in different diameters.

I bought a steel pulley with a 3/4" bore at the farm store for under $10. I wrapped electric tape around the alternator shaft until the pulley slipped snug over it, then cranked the nut down tight with an impact wrench. Been on there for years like that.
