12 volt battery?

I bought an 8n and wonder if its been converted to a 12 volt system. I can't tell from the battery if it's a 6 or 12 volt system. The battery does say 780 cold cranking amps. Does that sound like a 6 volt? I assume the size is different, too...this one is the same size as what's in my truck/car. Does that indicate it's a 12 volt? Also, what should I look for to indicate the system's been converted?

Graig.......would it surprize you to learn the EAZY way to differentiate between 6-volt and 12-volt batterys is to count the water caps. 3-caps ittza 6V and 6-cap ittza 12-volter. Simple, eh? .......Dell

ey,Dell..mine has two caps....does that mean it is a 4 volt?

To clarify this a little, if I may, since some batteries only have two caps, just count the number of filler holes in the battery. If it only has three holes it is six volt, if it has six holes, it is twelve volt.

Would it surprise you to know that 12 volt batteries can be measured with a voltmeter?

As others have said, count the caps or measure it w/ a voltmeter. That will tell you if it's a 6v or 12v battery. But, that doesn't always mean the charging system is 12v. As unbelievable as it sounds, some folks actually put 12v batteries in 6v tractors w/ the assumption that it will just take twice as long to charge.

If it has an alternator, chances are 99 out of 100 it is 12v.

If it has a 12v battery & a generator, you'll need to measure the generator output.
