12V vs 6V starter

I'm converting my Ford 2N to a 12-volt system andd wanted to know if I can keep the 6-volt starter or do I need to upgrade.
 
keep the 6v starters, they are stronger wound than 12v, just don't keep grinding for a long time. a starter wouldn't know the difference if it is pos or neg ground. do your homework to make sure everything is hooked up right, double check, other wise you will be on here asking where did i go wrong, lol. then bruce will give you his 50 tips...or just ask bruce!... i had my starter/genny when i got my tractor checked/rebuilt if needed, good batt, starts on 3 turns, still 6v...
 
Petroliana Guy,Theres a bunch of Ns out there with a 6 volt starter with 12 volt battery working great for years.
 
Petroliana Guy,You do know that the coil needs a 12 volt to 6 volt ceramic resister installed before the original balast resister if you are keeping the 6 volt coil.Otherwise you will smoke the coil and burn up the points.
 
Petroliana guy.........yes, use yer 6-volt starter motor with 12-volts. One of the advantages of 12-volts on the 6-volt starter motor is it turns yer worn-out low compression motor FAST enuff to start eazy. It should be intuitively obvious, do NOT grind enny starter motor LONG. 15-secs is long enuff to start enny engine ...unless... its FLOODED. Iff'n it flooded, change yer sparkies. NO ARGUE!!! Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025". Remember front mount points are 0.015" whether 6-or-12V, positive or negative ground. .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
 
No, you don't need a 6v starter, but if it has the OEM bendix on it, you should go ahead & replace it now. The OEM bendix was designed for 6v; a worn old bendix will not like twice the torque produced by 12 volts.

Or, you could just fix whatever problem you're having w/ the tractor & leave it 6v.
