12 volt vs. 6 volt

I bought a 1948 8n that has a 12 volt battery. Can I assume that the coil is a 12 volt coil?

Do you see a resistor(other than the OEM Ballast resistor on the back of the dash)in the wire going to the coil? If so, it is likely still a 6 volt coil and voltage is being dropped to 6 volts with the dropping resistor. 12 volt square coils can usually be O.K. with just the ballast resistor.

Well, I sure wouldn't assume that. But, if you want to assume it's a 12v coil & don't wish to find out for sure, the price of a new coil is $35. A 6v coil on 12v will melt.

If it has an additional resistor in the circuit, as Tom said, chances are very good that it's a 6v coil. But, once again, it might have too little or too much resistance. Too much & the tractor will have a weak spark; too little & you melt the coil.

If you want to check the resistance in the circuit, just let us know.
