12 volt swap

I have a 1952 8n 6volt .Iwould like to convert to 12 v gm alt. int. reg. will work fine swap to a 12v coil with a ballist resistor. But it is pos ground so if Iswitch the bat.to neg. ground the starter will turn the wrong way the bendix wont come out . Is it posable to change starter rotation? Iwas told that changing the starter brush wires [swap] them would make it turn the other way bat. change will put it back to what I need . any ideas would be great thanks

Believe it or not your starter doesn't care whether it is connected to Positive ground or Negative ground- it always turns the same direction. If you don't believe me try it both ways and see what happens.

" 12v coil with a ballist resistor. "

Why?

Just get a NAPA 12v coil, IC14SB. No resistor needed.

Re the starter, as awhtx said, it won't turn backwards. Reversing the polarity reverses the magnetic fields of BOTH the armature AND the field coils, which means it will still turn in same direction.

If you want to worry about something more likely to be a problem, replace the bendix. 12v creates twice as much torque & a weak/old bendix won't last long.

When you reverse the current in both the armature and the fields, the starter will rotate the same. As Dell would say, Isn't that amazing?

I thought the balast res. ex. would allow me to have full 12v at start then res. voltage at run .like an old car? it will help at the cold temps in n.n.y winter..

k jones........yep, a starter solenoid operated ballast resistor onnna 6-volt coil will give you hotter sparkies when starting. (whether cold weather or hot weather) But surprizingly enuff, the NAPA IC14SB provides even hotter sparkies without a ballast resistor switching scheme. .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
