12 volt conversion?

I just got off the phone with the people on this site and I ordered one. The man said that these can be hard on points. Is that just junk points, good points or both? P.S. disregaurd the email old.....

Biggest problem with 12 volts on the front mount distributors is that super weak coil and them loving to smoke test on a guy. As for converting one over to 12 volts it is very very simple to do. A simple alternator for a 1980 Chev pick up truck no power any thing at O'Reilly's is $45 then a bit of wiring and a ballast resister like a VR-1 from O'Reilly's and a diode like a radio shack 276-1661 and a bit or work and it is done. I can do them in my sleep any more

12 volt conversion on what? 8N, 9N, front or side distributor?

" The man said that these can be hard on points"

Well yea, if you install it wrong. And it can be bad on the coil as well. All of that can be fixed.

What it is really bad on is the 6v bendix. It was not designed for twice the torque of 12v.

Bruce animal has been working on a 2N but then if you answer as many post as we do sometimes one forgets LOL. I would have asked the same thing but I have been trying to help him out for the last month or more

whoever told you 12v is hard on points is GUILTY of leaving out HALF the story.

IF you use the correct coil, and or coil and resistor / resistor wire combination to keep primary current at the correct level, then 6v or 12v is just fine on the breaker points. capacitor don't care either.

ever notice the 3 cyl series use points as well.. native 12v too...

gotta love the myths perpetuated by parts counter people... sheesh..

Ah but sound it is a front mount and you know how much a pain in the back sides that square coil can be. LOL Then add that to the junk coils they sell now days

Well I did not get that at all, I am sixty years old and growing up if it ran it had points in it. Along those same lines, I am not afraid of a six volt set up, but after pricing the cut out and new battery it kind of made it cost prohibitive. This tractor is going to stay at a place that I farm through the summer, and if some one jumped it off to start it I might get to buy all of this stuff twice. I purchased the conversion from this web site, it comes with alt, wiring harness, brackets and 12 volt coil, that was why I questioned burning points.

yeah but not really..

just use the proper resistor and coil combo and it's all good...the newer 2.5 ohm coils and the oem resistor.. or an older coil pus a dropping resistor and the oem resistor.. that way you have about 2.3-2.5 ohms ahead of the 1 ohm coil.. etc..

my 2n is 12v.. never had an issue with it in the years I ran it that way..

you will still need the oem dash mounted resistor to use in conjunction with that 2.5 ohm coil. they likely sent you a lil ceramic resistor as well.. save it in the tool box...
