12 volt conversion problems

I am changing my tractor over to 12 volts. JMOR provided a nice wiring diagram that I followed exactly. I put the battery in and it ran down very quickly, 15 seconds total time cranking engine and the tractor would not start. I tried to jump it off with my truck, but still not enough juice. I took the battery out of my truck and put it into the tractor. When connecting the leads to the battery, upon contact there was more sparking on the post than normal. The battery was dead immediately. I connectied it with negative ground. Anyone know why it's dragging down the battery so fast. I took out the vol. reg, it has a 12volt coil, 12v bat, 1 wire alt, and I am only using the original resistor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

killing a full size truck battery 'very quickly' should make a wire smoke and burn.. even a starter sized wire should burn off insulation within 45 seconds to a minute.

Disconnect wire to alternator and see if sparking goes away.
