Just changed to 8v. Ran ok last week now it started to overheat in 15 min. Fan turns ok belt ok no fluid leeking. Was wondering if thermastat might be gone. How do I check. Oh yea just got the tractor and not a world class mech but might find my way around a box wrench but not much else. Please help. Don't need the wife complaining I brought home a piece of junk. Also enjoy the site. Thanks

First off, your heading says 12V but you then you say you changed it to 8V. So, which is it.

Are you sure it's really overheating? My money is that you put too much fluid in the radiator. You're only suppose to put in enough to barely cover the radiator core. Everything else will get thrown out pretty quickly.
Rookie mistake. (Don't ask me how I know.) I guarantee you're not the first one to do that.

Like Kenster said, the most common reason for an N to “over heat” is over filling the radiator. Only add enough fluid to cover the core. (check out tip # 23, below as well as tips 25 & 35) It is not actually over heating; it is just spewing out the excess water.

If the radiator is not overfilled, check for low coolant, a loose fan belt, debris in the radiator fins or a stuck thermostat. A bad water pump will usually squeak or leak.

Another rookie mistake is an 8v battery. You didn't really do that did you?

changing to 8v or 12v didn't cause it to overheat.. by itself.. though if you put an alt on and used a 1/2" pulley and belt .. you might not be turning the fan good.

check it..

Can't type well really is 12v. Itis a 12v battery. I haven't added any antifreeze or water it is same as last week not a lot of liquid comming out only from rad cap. Can see coolant near top of rad but nothing else about 2-3 in down. Also shut down 1st time it got hot enough to steam. Not sure if wife hit something or if it shut off on it's own. Read 50 tips a few times already there great. Thanks for the quick responce. How do I check for stuck therm? Thanks again

If you have a thermometer that will read that high, check the coolant to make sure that you are in fact overheating.

Make sure that your pressure cap is working correctly and that you have a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. Don"t run with plain water as a coolant. Rev the engine and watch the lower hose to make sure it isn"t collapsing. There is supposed to be a wire coil inside to prevent that but sometimes they are removed. Is your thermostat opening? Remove the rad cap and start the tractor. Watch for the coolant to flow from the upper hose into the radiator when the tractor gets to operating tempeature. If that doesn"t happen, the thermostat could be installed incorrectly or it"s not working properly.
Make sure the water pump drive belt is not slipping and that the pump is turning.

Finally make sure the timing is not retarded and/or the mixture is too lean. This can cause the engine to run hot.

Well thank you all. I added some 50-50 and ran it for another hour didn't seem to get too hot. Will be useing it much more next week and see what happens. Will be checking a few more things then. Gotta go to work sun.

Thanks again

First, make sure it has a t-stat. Squeeze the upper hose. You'll feel it if it has one. If it does, start the tractor & remove the radiator cap. When the t-stat opens (@ 160*), you should see movement in the water.

Glad you found the tips helpful.
