6 Volt Tractor Battery

any of you oldtimers have a recomendation on brand name for a 6 volt tractor battery?
putting it on a 9N front mount distributor.

You wont have much choice.Exide and Johnson Controls and Interstate.Just bot an Exide, price was 15 bucks more than last year.

I have NAPA #7244 "Commercial" 6 volt batteries in both my '52 8N and '30 Model A.

Fit good, heavy duty, last long time.

About $80 each.

Others here use TSC battery

When I purchased my 1951 8N, in October, 2002, it came w/ the above battery, a Deka, model 901MF. The date code on the battery was April, 2000.

I'm not sure how the PO maintained the battery the first two years of it's life, but given the overall condition of the tractor when I purchased it, my bet is it sat unused most of the time.

I always run the N's to operating temp every 3 or 4 weeks if they haven't been used. To make sure the battery doesn't discharge, all the N's now have float chargers.

I also keep everything "clean, bright & tight", use the braided strap & 00 gauge positive cables.

So, in addition to it being a well made battery, doing everything else right probably helped this battery to make it 8 years & 6 months!

It finally refused to turn the 1951 over in Sept 2008, so I replaced it w/ a new one. Another Deka, model 901MF; cost w/ exchange was $69.

The Deka dealer is in the Hanover Airpark, about 15 miles from you.

I just bought a JD battery. It was not cheap, but I hope it lasts a few years longer. From what I was led to believe they are Exide with a JD name plate.

Actually, there's even LESS of a choice, as Johnson Controls manufactures Intercourse Batteries.
FAQ

Not wanting to be a lone dissident, but I needed a battery about 6-7 years ago,Autozone close,so I bought a battery,6v. It has never failed me[knock on wood] and is still out there waiting for me to start up. It cost 30.00 and has been good. If someone else has bad experience with them, that's life, just telling my story.I've always had good luck with Interstate, but there wasn't a dealer close, and as I said,I needed a batt.right then.---lha

I went with a heavy duty truck 6 volt. It is a PITA to get in the hood cover, it"s oversize, and needs to be lowered in sideways. But has a LOT more CCA than the standard battery for a N.

When I need a car battery I normally pick up a Dura-Last gold. They are a well made and long lasting battery. I don't begrudge you going to Autozone to get a battery, and if it was only $30 and it has lasted multiple years, it sounds like you got a good deal. Certainly better than my JD battery deal.

Thanks for the input My 9N came with a Interstate but is ready for replacement, the Hydrometer says it is weak.
Cost was not a Issue here I just did not want to run to the Wally World and get a cheap one.
Bruce I allready had to run to Fredericksburg this weekend, Hanover is just over the hill from there. Thanks for the input.
