12 volt wiring/coil

A customer brought over an 8n and it was converted to 12 volts. Wiring was a mess and tractor did not start. I made a new wiring harness up. The coil was missing so I used Tisco coil part # 9n12021-12v this is a front mount. There is a sticker on the coil that says 12v 2.5 ohms. So I assumed I should not need resistor because the coil should have one in it. Well the coil cracked in half and was hot. Everything else is good power to the coil it charges. So with the coil do I still need resistor because I have too many volts to the coil 12 volts is what my meters says. I know when you use a 6 volt coil you need to add a resistor in series to drop the 12v down to 6 volt. So if I add part# 8NE10306 which is a resistor 3.0 ohms this would solve the problem right?

here's the deal. the 8ne10506 is not a 3 ohm resistor.. it's a half ohm.. which when added to a 2.5 ohm coil priomary equals 3 ohms.. which.. is JUST BARELY adequate.

better would be to use the oem dash mounted ballast resistor and that 12v 2.5 ohm coil.

here's the other deal. most of these things are made in china.. both the resistor and coil. I've personally measured 4 2.5 ohm coils and one of em was close :) best thing to do, if not using the oem dash resistor with the 12v square coil, is to check the ammeter so that your primary current is no more than 4a for the ignition circuit.. and preverably 3.5 or so..

if it's a good coil and 8ne10306 it might work ok.. but I'd go dash resistor and coil and be safer.
