well i was sent here from TT, my question was on which carb i should order off this site, the original eq. style or the zenith, but they sugjested there might still be hope for the original, and to ask you, so, were working on a '53 jubilee, with the original 428 carb, in the past 12 years ive owned the tractor, ive put 2 kits in the carb and 1 for the previous owner when he had it, this thing is blowing rich black smoke now and ive leaned it out untill it stumbles then back untill it quits stumbeling, adjusted the main jet for highest idle and then played with it again, the carb has all new parts in it, and the float is adjusted per instructions on the kit, can i have a crack somewhere in the housing or am i just missing something? tractor just got a complete tune up and had bright hot spark , this is a working tractor and needs to operate every day, so i need to get er running right |

eric;
Ya just got cornfused, a little....happens to me all the time!!!! LOL
The bigger of the two adj. needles...the one on top, is the power adj needle, and the small needle, on the side is the idle/air adj.!!!
You say......
"i think the main jet thing from zane might have got it, "
Good thing Zane caught that....I dang sure didn't!!! :shock:
Sounds like you were feeding it more fuel, and cutting down the air it needed!!! LOL
I think ya got it now though. :wink:

| lol actualy im here everyday at least twice, just lurking, sometimes i just dont have any advise to offer, or the question posted has been answered fully,i still like ya'all, i think the main jet thing from zane might have got it, --- if i'd just open my eyes and read! and remember what i read, things like this wouldnt happen, i think ive, got it all wrong, the jube was overhauled about 15 years ago, completly and professionaly by the previous owner, he spent around 3 grand on it, its run great ever since i cleaned out the air cleaner including the "brillow pad" up in the housing, and put in fresh oil up to the mark on the cup, compression was fine but now im going to chec k it again, just to play it safe, plugs are fouled, [new last week autolites] soft soot on them, going back in and recheck the carb again, this time i'll take the manuel out there not rely on my brain lol |

| | "adjusted the main jet for highest idle" Why would you adjust the main jet for idle???? Main jet needle is for high speed power adjustment. Zane |

WOW Eric;
I hardly ever see ya around here anymore!!! OH YEH.....I know you got a jub, and don't like us anymore!!! :lol: :lol:
Right to the point: Lots of things can be goin' on here.
1. could be oil and not fuel smoke ( I'm betting it's oil)
2. Could be, bad valve seats
3. could be broken or stuck oil rings
4 could be low spark
5 could be timing
And last but least....could be that the carb needs to be overhauled!!! AGAIN!!!
M/S carbs are great carbs, and hard to beat.!!!
Not saying it is NOT the carb, but thick black smoke is usually caused by oil!!
Check this pic. for the right look of yer sparkies....then go from there.
After checking the plugs, I think yer best bet is to do a compression test.
??? for you: How long has it been since this JUB was overhauled????
AND when was the last compression???
BTW: 2 cleanings and kits in the carb, for a 12 yr period is nothing!!! I do my carb., once every two yrs., even if there is nothin' wrong with it!!!
But that is just ME!!! :roll:
Post back, if ya still find it is carb. related, but do the compression test anyway!!!!!!
HTH ya!!!

| You can soak these carbs in cleaner. Install new parts. And still have a clog in the small holes. Just to be sure you need to run a wire thru every hole. |

| | eric, you ever run a compression check? Check your plugs too. Are the plugs the good color? "this thing is blowing rich black smoke" your plugs ought to reflect a "rich" mixture. When was the lst time you checked the air intake? Dirty air will make it run rich too. |

Re: carb problem for gb in mt in reply to Bob Harvey, 03-15-2010 17:08:42

| | Bob, yes, "dirty" was a reference to the fact that restricted air flow will create a greater venturi effect, thus a low pressure will try to pull more vaporized gas without the proper air fuel ratio. The term dirty meaning a restricted or dirty oil bath cleaner. But like I said, the plugs will tell the truth.....they dont lie. |
