 Hi Guys, When I installed a new Ignition Switch I was not totally sure what port on the resistor block the switch was wired to so I guessed. (should have looked more closely before unscrewing things) When I went to start my tractor it would not start. I tried and tried, then finally switched a "unknown" switch then tried starting it and it started right up. However I'm concerned as to what that switch even does. It was added by someone else and is not on anyones wiring diagrams that I have seen. Also I'm concerned that the wiring is wrong all together because this is how the guy had it wired and it's not matching peoples diagrams even if you don't factor the "unknown switch". I would like to wire it correctly but don't know what to do with the "unknown" switch. To make matters worse I don't think the battery is charging anymore. I have attached a diagram I drew up. This is as you see it looking through the battery door. My tractor is a 1942 9N 6 volt. I would like advice on what purpose that "unknown" switch has, why it effects the tractor starting, can I remove it, and the correct way to wire it all. Any help would be great! PTG in MN |

| | I missed two wired in my original drawing. There is a wire coming from the right of the ammeter going to the generator, and a wire from the right port of the resistor block going to the distributer. Sorry, |

| | It looks like a replacement ignition switch. This is an easy fix. Rip it all out. You have a OEM 6v front distributor tractor; it will be much easier & to buy a new wiring harness & terminal block to go w/ that new switch & just get it all wired correctly (see tip # 42; BTDT) Otherwise, you will just continue to have problems. Check the ammeter; does it show a charge or not? Adjust the screw on the generator & see what happens. Check the generator outout w/ your multi-meter. If the generator is working, check the cut out. |

| | Bruce, Makes sense what you are saying. I'm going to paint in about a month and was planning to do the wiring harness then when I putt things off. I have a couple questions for you and sorry for being so new to this, just wanting to learn. Do the different ports of the resistor block and ammeter serve different functions? I ask because the guy I bought this from as you can see has things wired totally different. Then diagrams Ive seen on this site. Examples from my 9N wiring being different... 1)The ignition switch goes straight to ammeter not the resistor block like the real diagram shows 2)My started relay is wired back to the left port on the ammeter not the right. 3)My lights are wired straight to the ammeter not the resistor block 4)The left side of my resistor block is not even being used, the real diagram shows the left side going to the distributor and on mine the right side runs to the distributor. 5)My generator cut out relay is wired to the ammeter not to the center port on the resistor block like the real wiring diagram shows. How was my tractor ever running when wired so wrong? Just dumb luck? I totally get your thoughts on take it all off and start over, and believe me I will. I'm just trying to learn how mine even ran, and what purpose the different ports on the ammeter and resistor block serve, (if any). Any of your thoughts would be helpful. P.S. do you mind attaching the wiring diagram you use for a 9N 6 volt? |

| | Ports......you had me for a minute on that. Then, I figured out that you are of the PC generation & I'm not! :) To me, they are terminals. Looking at it from the front, you have left, middle & right. W/ 2 exceptions, all wires go to the center terminal; it's always hot because the wire from the battery connects to it. The wire on the left terminal goes to the coil. The wire on the right is FROM the ignition switch. One side of the ignition switch is hot, the other isn't. When you turn the key on, the current flowing from the center terminal to the switch now flows to the right terminal and through the resistor to the coil. The ammeter has a loop or terminals. It all works the same; the current comes from the battery to the solenoid then to the ammeter then to the middle terminal. As far as wiring diagrams go, it doesn't get much simpler than that. Sorry, I don't own a 2N & the wiring is slightly different, so I can't send you a diagram. But, do an archives search on "wiring diagram JMOR". Jesse, aka JMOR, has previously posted his; I like them because they have actual pictures of each part. |
