Check to see how much gas is in the tank by sticking a stick into the tank. The gas pick up is about 2" on my 8n. I had the same problem then put in another 5 gallons and it cranked and runs fine.

CBD,

Pull plugs. Add a few tablespoons to as much as you want of ATF or MMO. ATF is cheaper. Put plugs back in loosely to keep junk out of the cylinders. Let it set for several days. Pull plugs again. Turn over several time to blow excess fluid out. Put in plugs and jump start. Let it run until warm.

Check the spring on the flapper on the choke plate. If that is missing it won"t get enough vacume at cranking speed on 6 volt battery.

cbd said: (quoted from post at 12:16:25 03/15/10) I did a compression check in the summer it was 80s and 90s. it has sat a yr off and on it will start every now and then if jumped with a 12v booster it starts right up also if you pull start it it starts right up.
The reason it starts well on 12v or pull start is that compression is on low side & the extra speed helps overcome the low compression.

sound slike compression.. might be stuck rings from setting ( add oil to the cyls and let set ).. or might be a vacume leak at that new manifold.

post back for more details on soaking the rings or testing for a vac leak. / sealing that leak.

add some atf fluid tot he spark plug holes and put the spark pl;ugs back in.. leave it set a day, remove the plugs, rotate engine over half a turn, add more oil, repalce plugs, come back a day later, remov ethe plugs, and run the engine over with the starter a bit to expell oil out the spark plug holes.. ( have some newspaper or towels ready! ).. that will help free up the rings.. if you have any atf fluid left, add some to the gas and some to the oil prior to an oil change.

as for the leaky manifold or carb, start her and then spray the carb and manifold down with wd-40 around the gaskets and see if the engine sound changes.. if it does, you have a vacume leak..

CBD,

How long has it been since it ran? Have you tried a squirt of starting fluid? Have you done a compression test to verify you have enough compression to run? If low compression it won't pull the gas into the cylinders. Have you replaced your plugs (Autolite 437s, set at .025")?

Good luck,
Danny

As Dell says auto lite 437s and me I would fill the cylinders with ATF let sit a week, be sure you put the plugs back in for that week. Pull the plugs back out use your old one and save the 437 till after doing this. With the plugs out and the plug wires marked so you do not mess that up spin the engine over to clear the cylinders. Put the new plug in and try to start it up. Run it till warm and then check compression and I'll almost bet your up in the 100s unless the old girl is just plain wore out

cbd.......Champion H10C sparkies ain't gonnna stop yer engine from starting. As stated AutoLite 437's are prefered over original H10's. Hassta do with invisible no-lead contamination.

Howsomevers......LOW COMPRESSION will keep yer engine from starting. Ford specs: 90psi minimum. Rings gitt sticky and won't expand and seal completely in engines that have sat for a time. I use MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) squirted down the sparkie holes and letter sitt fer coupple odays. Others like ATF (automatic tranny fluid) $10 fix, (cheap)

Crank the engine a coupple of times BEFORE replacing sparkies so you don't gitta "hydraulic lock", then puttin new dry sparkies. Iff'n engine is good, ittle start with boost from 12v direct to starter stud and smogg the 'skeeters. ......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
