12V conversion problem

I posted a while back and JMOR sent me a wiring diagram for a 12V system. I wired my tractor per his diagram except I added the in-line resistor on the wire to the coil that was provided with my kit. I get 12V at the alternator and 12V at the coil when I turn the key on. However I don"t get anything from the starter when I push the button. I checked the voltage across the battery posts and when I push the button the voltage drops to less than 1V. there was a cutout wired into the 6V system but I did not wire that in because there was no reference to it in any 12V wiring. Does anyone have any ideas. I checked the ground and it is tight using the same point used for the positive ground system.

Rick......you write......"I checked the voltage across the battery posts and when I push the button the voltage drops to less than 1V"......congratulations, you have found a BAD BATTERY. The starter should load yer battery down to about 10-volts. Its the LAW, electro-chemical law. Would it surprize you to learn 1-volt won't turn a starter motor??? ...nor... will 1-volt sparkle yer sparkies. Isn't that amazing. You doubt? Take yer BAD BATTERY in for a "free" checkout under LOAD .......Dell
