Checking the output on a 6v generator....

I took a lead and connected the genny post with the 6 volt lamp. I grounded the lamp to the battery. I did this with the tractor running. The lamp was tested and is good. Lamp did not light even a little. Did I do that right? I'm taking the genny in Monday to an auto-electric shop and having someone who knows about these things test it also. Spinning my wheels is getting me no where here. Until I can determine that the genny is working there is not a lot of point in going any further on this part of the tractor. I don't have a single known quantity in this system except the battery.

Dave......a known good lamp from yer 1-terminal genny to battery HOT terminal (NOT the flatbraid ground cable) should glow with expected brilliance. Yep, time to byte the bullet and waste a weekend, eh? As I and others have said, you can run on yer 6-volt battery for several days without the genny being electrically connected. But you still need the genny pulley to run yer water pump. ......Dell

Oops...guess I better not run it while the genny is out! I pulled her off the tractor this evening as I have to go up to my nearest Ford dealer and buy gaskets for the left side trumpet which decided to drip after I got the right side put together. That will keep me busy this weekend. Gonna ask them to test the genny but not gonna hold my breath. Failing that I will be running the bench tests in the FO-4 on the genny and doing as it recommends. I bench tested the ammeter tonight also and it works fine. I also ran the wires twice and cannot find a flaw there. Even checked them all for continuity. Really hoping I will find a problem inside the genny that I can fix. Not only will I get my tractor done but I get to feel like a real stud for doing it. Thanks again!
