When was the proofmeter added? My 51 8n doesn't have a hole in the dash for one. I'd like to have a tack |

| | Dell, thanks for that tip, I really just want it to properly set the governor and carb after a rebuild. Mine is definately a 1951 based on the serial number. Must have just missed the change. I am the 3rd owner and the second owner bought it pretty much original. |

| Matt,
My 53 Jubilee has the proofmeter in the dash. I saw an old dark gray ford, no idea how old it looked ancient, that had what appeared to have a factory proofmeter mounted to the side of the dash and the proofmeter was powered by a cable connected to the back side of the 6v generator. Trying to get this tractor started on 6v made me a believer in converting to 12v.

| | A 1951 N w/o a proofmeter would be a rare tractor....or you have a 51 engine in a 1950 or earlier tractor. The proofmeter came out shortly after the side distributor did in March, 1950. The first sidemount was in s/n 263,844. Sometime soon after that, the proofmeter was added. Dealers would retro fit sidemount N's w/ the dash & proofmeter. You can get induction tachs from JC Whitney, etc,. |

| | Matt......according to the records, the "proofmeter" was installed about the same time they changed the distributor from a 4-nipple frontmount to a 5-nipple sidemount. And governors cup with meter drive. According to the book changed at engine s/n: 8N263843. (about May 1950) You do realize, early 4-nipple engines will fit ALL 8N's. Many have been replaced without regard to the proofmeter. Iff'n you want a tachometer, gitta watch-battery powered LCD tach that you can stick-back to yer dash and then wrap an insulated wire around yer #4 sparkie wire. $25 (cheap) .......Dell |
