I'm guessing you started on Fleet-type boats and ended up on Boomers or the like? My Dad was on the Burrfish (SSR-312) as well as the Congor during the Korean War. We went together to the Memorial Service at Kings Bay last weekend, which was a blast - included a tour of the USS Wyoming, which is quite the difference from the old diesel boats (but amazingly are still running the old 1930s design Fairbanks-Morse 'rock crusher' engine for backup power).
Thanks for your (and all our other veterans on here) service!

Thanks for you thoughts on this Veterans Day. We all need to thank all of our veterans both past and present. Their sacrifice for our freedom goes beyond what words can describe.

Jim SC, anyone who will GET IN a submarine, and then actually untie it from the dock, is a hero in my mind. Thanks for your service...

My wife and would also like to thank all of our Veterans and their families for their service. I can not even begin to put into words how grateful I am to the men and women that serve and have served in our armed forces. Thank You for your service, and God Bless America. My Bride and me attended the two Veterans Day ceremonies at the school our grand daughters attend today. One is in elementary school and one is in high school both on the same campus but they had separate programs.Total enrollment is probably around 600 students. The kids and faculty went to a lot of trouble and work to put the programs on.The younger group sang patriotic songs and students recited historical stories of conflict appropriate for their age.The high school program had that plus the band playing the marching songs of the service branches, and student speakers saying in their own words of stories of things important to them related to the military. They also had a crusty old retired Army Colonel for a guest speaker that made a twenty minuet talk that held everyones attention from the youngest 9th grader to the oldest veteran there. After each program the veterans and their guests were invited and escorted by students for refreshments in rooms where we were seated at tables covered with hand written cards containing messages of thanks for our service and well mannered students waited on us hand and foot. The oldest veteran was a Korean war vet, last year there were 4 WWII vets not present this time.In fact fewer than twenty vets attended all total. We need to do a better job of showing up at these programs the kids work so hard to put on to honor veterans. It's more about them than us.As individuals we are what we are, being a veteran puts one in a group of people our nation recognizes on November 11th.Those that honor veterans deserve our presence to thank them and show our appreciation for their efforts.

Thank YOU, Larry Root! As a Coast Guard vet who served in Viet Nam, it means a lot to hear a Thank You now and then. Our family has a rich military tradition: My father and his two brothers all served during WWII (one brother died at Normandy and my father died on Veterans Day, 2004); My uncle on my mother's side was a pilot in the Army Air Corp during WWII; his two sons (my cousins) both served in Viet Nam, one Navy and one Army; my two brothers and I all served in the U. S. Coast Guard; my niece is a 1/c petty officer in the Coast Guard; my nephew is a career Navy Corpsman/Diver...both he and my niece have been to Iraq. My other nephew is a former Marine MP who now works for a civilian company which keeps sending him places which he can't talk about but which involve sand and things that go bang.
Didn't mean to be this long-winded but we're ALL d*mned proud to have done our part to preserve this wonderful country. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I too offer my most sincere thanks to all of our veterans, for whom I have the utmost respect.
This past May 16, Armed Forces Day, I lost my Mother, a WWII veteran.
She was a nurse in MacArthur's Army in the South Pacific, serving in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. She met my Father in Leyte Gulf in January 1945.
