My 8N would not start for a 3 months. Before that it worked great, I used it to mow 1 acre every week. I finally found time to look at it this weekend. It had been sitting outside. I took the distributor off, found the points not opening. I put a new set in, gapped at .15, checked the basic timming, for a 1/4" gap between the mounting hole with a ruler.
Now the engine starts right up(great), but it runs rough. I took the distributor out again, double checked the opening of the points, put back in. I then tried to advance the timing and then retard the timing, just a little bit. But this did not make it running better, so I put it back the way it was.
I checked the spark plugs, are showing a black residue(too rich). Changed them, but no change. I did not mess with the carb earlier(the main screw is set at 1 1/4 turns out.
I had the engine (professionally)overhauled with new rings, etc, 15 years ago, it does not smoke or use oil, was in great operating operating shape, purred like a kitten before this.
The distributor was replaced about 4 years ago.
Any ideas?? Thanks, Jerry

Just to be clear, the order of the cylinders is 1234 from front to back on the engine. However, on the distributor, the firing order is 1243 counter clockwise starting in the upper left corner of the distributor. Please excuse the crude drawing:

This is on this board a thousand plus times, but here ya go again...

Just a suggestion[from what happened to me]when you checked the points, check each lobe,as sometimes there is just enough difference to make it fire bad.---lha

Jerry

Double check the firing order. It is way too easy to put the plug wires back in place in the wrong order. It should be 1243 front to back

Dan, you were right, I got the 3 & 4 plug wires swapped. It still is running rough, even backfired, so tomorrow I will take the Distributor back off and check it again. I want to make sure that I check the basic timing. I only moved the plate on the outside, no more than 1/16" each way, but I still want to check it out. Thanks

Correction - Re: 8N will not run good after changing points in reply to redbarns, 11-07-2009 17:16:55
Dan, I think I misunderstood you. I thought you were saying that the numbering on the cylinders (front to back) was 1,2,4,3. But it should be 1,2,3,4.
I now understand the firing numbers.
If that is the case, then I was right in the wiring. I will have to change it back tomorrow.
Thanks
