GB: I'm trying to free up the choke shaft and butterfly on a TSX237. I've soaked it about a week-no change. After disassembly, do I dare use gentle heat to see if that will break it free? Thanks.--Bert (in MT)

Well, if it will not turn at all, then it is prob. rusted up tight at the end of

the rod.

I've had some luck spraying the penetrant right at the end going in the side of the casting, while tapping lightly on the other end of the rod face, with a small tack hammer, and twisting slowly at the same time.

Gotta really be carefull not to hit it too hard for fear of cracking the cast.

Gary :)

Dr. Bert said: (quoted from post at 21:09:41 11/07/09) Gary- Thanks for the response. This carburetor is off a J D power unit (LUC engine) I just acquired it (the carb) last week and have been soaking it in ATF. Had another one like this and destroyed the choke shaft trying to forcibly remove it. Have not tried to remove the screws holding the butterfly plate yet. Will try to get pictures and post them Monday. Bert

Bert;

You say:" Have not tried to remove the screws holding the butterfly plate yet. "

Those screws are what holds the plate securely to the rod.

Remove the screws, then with needlenose pliers, reach in the choke throat, and from the air horn, remove the plate and flap as a unit.(may have to tug on it, while moving the flap back and forth.

Once ya do that the choke return spring has to be taken off, slipped off the choke rod arm, and then the rod should slide out of the rod hole.

Try not to loose the little flap spring for the flap. You will have to have that to re-install the choke plate , to the new choke rod!!!!!

Clear as mud huh??????

Just follow those instructions and you should not have any problems.

If you do, send me an email, and I'll try to talk you through it.!!!

Give me an up-date, on yer progress.

Gary :)

Gary: I'm aware that the plate has to come out before the choke rod can be pulled out. My problem is that the choke rod is frozen and will not turn. I have to get it to rotate some to gain access to the two screws.

Re: Question for GBinMT in reply to JMOR, 11-07-2009 11:49:13

I'm not familiar with the TSX237??? What is it on, machinery-wise.

That said...I don't use heat on any of the TSX M/S carb parts or bodies. Reason being....If too much heat is applied to the carb casting , then pressure put to any component on/in the casting it will break the casting.

I use "Freeze Off" in the spray can. Comes in cans like this and can be bought at most autoparts stores and some hardware stores.:

Would like to know what piece of machinery this carb is attached to?????

Are you sure that the rod does not have a broken part of the rod itself???

Were you able to extract the plate from the inside of the rod???

You do know that most TSX M/S carbs have a two piece Flap and plate, and those have to come out prior to pulling the rod out of the body of the carb???????

Keep me updated, and like I said , would like to know more about that carb #.!!???

A picture would be helpful...if ya can!!!

Gary :)
