I was just putting a new drive gear on my starter and the drive gear got spun out the spiral and won't go back in, just cogs the rachet teeth if you try turning in reverse. I'm betting there is a very simple way to release it - Would someone please enlighten me? If you know how to release/retract the drive gear I'd appreciate that tip also.

If it's the old style bendix, you can hold the gear up to a wire brush on your bench grinder & spin it in the direction that the engine turns & it will retract. Or, just put back extended. It will retract when the engine starts.

Grinding an egg-shaped hole at the 2 o'clock position will make removal & installation of the starter easier.

It's the new style. The old one is latched out also. Possibly the same?

Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you saying you have two starter drives, an old one & a new one?

Yes, old one is shot. I had just posted some pics for someone else showing the worn spiral and teeth. I have now removed the old one.

If the link doesn't work, it is the postings earlier today "Starter Update". The old one is latched OUT as shown in those pics. I have a new style one to replace it and just got it onto the starter shaft and it got latched OUT just as shown for the old one while I was working with it. If I turn it as to drive it away from the motor, it just rachets and doesn't run out the spiral. But I got it installed. I'm hoping it will spin back when the tractor starts. I did check the teeth on the ring gear and they all look fine.

Thanks.
