Neither one.

Try again. That isn't serial number. It's the part number for the cylinder head.

Look at the picture. See the 4 1/2" x 1" flat spot behind the oil filter canister on the block & below the head? Look there.

Michias.......no wonder yer confused. Looks like a farmerized repair for cracked block covering yer engine serial number. LEAVITT!!!!

Engine serial number ain't that important except to sphincterly challenged self-appointed originality inspectors. All you need to know is whether yer engine is a 4-nipple frontmount ...or... a 5-nipple sidemount. You can count, can't you???

Iff'n fer summ reason, ya just gotta know when yer tractor was made, sometimes there's plain dates stamped on the lip of the hydraulic pump plate. Also rear trumpets have coded casting dates that can be 'cyphered'. ......Dell, who's NOT an authority

Machias.......nipples, not ribs (grin) and NO I don't know the rib-count with respect to year of tractor as they are more replaceable than rear axle trumpets which have casting date codes ......Dell

This site should give you all the info you need to date the engine & tractor. Pay close attention to the info on casting codes.

:o) Nope not one of these "sphincterly challenged self-appointed originality inspectors". So I'll leave it alone. Any other "clues" to guesstimate the year? I was reading somewhere if you only have one rib on the rear fenders it's probably a 1941. Does this sound about right. Thanks

Gotcha, Thanks, there is a plate over the spot where the serial number should be. I'll take a photo and post it. Thanks again....that number was cast on the top of the engine.

Machias,

Is this the number STAMPED into the left side of the engine? Not a number that's been CAST in?

If it's a definite 3 you should include it,that would make your tractor a 1941.

So, if I put 3 rib fenders on my 1950 8N, that would make it a 1941? :)

You can't determine year by bolt on parts alone. A few similar casting codes are more reliable.
