I pulled the starter on my '44 2N today. The starter drive (aka Bendix?) had apparently jammed. The photo shows wear on part 11367 Pinion and Barrel Drive (1942 parts list). I'm thinking it should be replaced.

Questions:
- Do you agree that I should replace it?
- If so, should I replace it with the "new improved starter drive" (52-11350C on this web site) or the original style (R2325 on this web site)?
- How do I remove and replace the starter drive from the starter motor?

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Tim, while you have the starter off, take time to polish up the mating surfaces of the starter and engine. It helps alleviate problems related to poor ground.

I'm planning on doing a polish job. I was surprised to find that the engine surface was mostly painted.

Tim......you ask......"How do I remove and replace the starter drive from the starter motor?"......uh, would you believe you remove the roll-pin that holds the Bendix on the starter shaft???

Just gently clamp yer starter shaft UPSIDE-DOWN so the drive is resting ontop of yer vise exposing the roll-pin. Now with yer left armpit, press down and you can easily use a drift (nail?) and hammer the pin outta the shaft. Simple, eh?

Replacement is a reversal of the removal....except many grind a "wedge like point" on one end of the roll-pin so it starts in the starter shaft hole eazier.

As fer replacement Bendix, gitt the new and improved "clutch-drive" Bendix. ......Dell

Dell,
Does "upside-down" mean with the shaft vertical and the motor on the bottom? Or with the shaft horizontal and the electrical connection on the bottom? I've looked for the roll-pin but haven't found it yet. Would I be correct in assuming I can re-use the same roll-pin?

But I'm still not sure if I've identified the problem with the tractor not starting. Do you think that the marks I've called "wear" in the photo could have contributed to the starter jamming or otherwise not working correctly?

geeze Tim.......I don't know how to more plainly explain how to hold yer starter motor in yer vise.

MOTOR IS UP, delicately balancing the long skinny drive shaft on the Bendix "dome" spring in the jaws; exposing the roll-pin while gently gripping it in the vise jaws with the starter Bendix above the jaws. Then yer left armpit falls naturally on the end of the starter motor so you can gently apply some pressure on yer starter Bendix "dome" spring exposing 1/8" roll-pin so you can tap it out holding drift (nail?) in yer left hand and right hand using a lite hammer. UNDERSTAND???

Installation is a reversal of the removal.

I don't see how you could interpret that to mean "horizontally".

Yes, generally speaking, roll-pins are "re-usable".

And NO, I have no idea whether that "dent" is the cause of yer Bendix sticking .......the dirty pitts Dell

Sorry I didn't understand, Dell. It's just that the starter is positioned horizontally on the tractor, I guess. "Motor is up" explains it just fine to me. Unfortunately I don't know if replacing the starter drive is the solution to the problem I had.

Tim,

I'd replace it...they're relatively cheap...and a pain to get to.

WHERE do you see "wear"??? Looks to me like someone attacked it with a grinder.

Nothing wrong (usually) with going to the more modern "positive engagement" type.

Bob, I'd agree that it looks more like an attack than wear. The question remains, should I replace it? And if so, with the newer version? And what are the steps?

If this wear/grinding isn't a problem, should I be looking for something else that caused the jam?

Hi Tim,
Didn't see a reply to the question of how to replace. I'm about to do mine in a few minutes. You compress the washer/spring from the end of the shaft - toward the motor - and it exposes a pin that you drive out. Then it just slips off the end (I hope). I'm attaching a pic of my starter drive. It has wear straight around the spiral so the barrel won't retract on mine. Yours looks pretty good compared to mine, but looks don't make it work right.

Grits,
At this point, my biggest issue is that I don't really know what caused the problem of the tractor not starting. Having taken out the starter, I haven't found anything broken or lodged that would necessarily cause a jam or other misfunction. I really don't see any wear on my splines. I'll take a closer look at the spiral. I've read warnings about not messing with the Bendix--I'm not sure if that means "don't take it apart unless you need to" or if it means "don't even move it around."
Thanks for the photos and description!
Tim
