My 2N starter was spinning at high speed without turning over engine. I found my bendix had some additional grooves worn in where the spiral grooves are and so the gear wouldn't travel/engage properly. I have gotten a replacement (got the new & Improved style sold here at YTMAG) and plan to put on this weekend. Just wondering what people recommend for lubricant in this application before I put it back in.

Thanks.

While you have the starter removed take a look at the teeth on your flywheel ring. These tractors normally stop at the same spot and consequently the stater hits the flywheel ring at the same spot when you hit the button. Look to see if the flywheel ring has worn teeth at one or two spots. A new starter drive will help for a while but if you know your flywheel ring is marginal it will give you a clue of where to look in the future if you starter spins but the engine does not turn over.

NO LUBE!

lube will cause drag! drag will cause a problem spinning out and engaging. I'd even hesitate to use silicon spray or greaseless graphite dust.

this is one of those places where clean and shiney really is best.

Thanks. I was imagining it getting sticky after some years in there, so I thought that no lube might be the answer. It seemed clean and dry (but worn) so I didn't know if that was maybe why it failed. Guess not.

I recently saw an interesting picture of grease fibers taken by scanning electron microscopy. Apparently grease is a mixture of fibers (chemically a soap they said) that entraps the lighter lubricant oil component of the mix. Helped me understand why grease gets sticky over time..

Thanks again!
