Here is some info on an older TroyBuilt Mower.

I have a 2004 42" TroyBuilt Bronco That I bought Used a couple of years ago. It"s built fairly strong. It has an Intec 18.5 hp v-twin engine. It ran real strong, quiet, smooth. It has a gas pedal and when floored the mower is pretty quick. I like the way the lawn looks when mowed with it. Fairly easy to maintain. It even has a beer can holder. Thats what sold me.LoL

And now for the rest of the story. Either the PO went by the old saying close enough or he couldn"t read numbers. I"ve had to replace the main mower deck belt three times. the first was when the belt he put on broke and the other was because the bearing in one of the spindles from the belt he had on it went out and broke my new correct belt. I"ve also had to replace the main drive belt. Again the PO used an incorrect belt. When I replaced the deck belts the deck took about 5 min. tops to remove. The drive belt took awhile its kind of hard to get to.

But overall except for those couple of learning periods it"s been a pretty good mower. Untill lately that is. Couple weeks back while mowing one of the piston connecting rods broke and knocked a 2 inch dia. hole in the side of the engine. The engine still starts and runs. Oh well, here we go again. Don"t know if I"ll repair this motor or get another yet.

It all depends on what you're looking for. Troy bilt is part of MTD which also builds Cub Cadet, white, and most of your other home depot/lowes/tsc mowers. You are definitely going to get what you pay for.

Case in point, my dad and I bought a couple of MTD Zero turns this fall. Mine is the residential unit (rzt 42) and his is the semi-commercial unit (Z-Force 50). The build quality between the two is like night and day. The residential is all stamped and quite cheaply constructed. The semi-commercial has a tube frame, much better hydro's and some other nice features (like a belt tensioner that you can access).

Of course the MSRP for mine was $2300 while his was $4500. He needed a better machine because it will be his only mower. I didn't because I'm just going to use it to cut where I can't with the 6ft finish mower.

Just remember you get what you pay for. You can't just ask "are troybilts / cub cadets / etc a good brand to buy. Everyone's selling cheap versions right now.

I've had a 9hp B&S elec start TroyBilt 33" twin blade walk-behind for about 10 years. Don't know where it was made. Does a good job. Went through a couple of batteries first two years until I discovered Batteries Plus. Their batt has lasted about 8 years. Stout mower but difficult to shift into reverse. I'm working toward selling the TB and getting a DR so I can switch between rotary cutter and finishing mower using same powerhead. Can also get other implements for same unit.

I'm not a big fan of the new Troy Bilt products. I personally believe the quality is not as good as what the original products were. But what is??? I own both an older chipper shredder and 8HP rototiller that were made by Troy Bilt in New York and they both are outstanding products. That said, I might considering buying one today if the price was right. I believe they use a lot of Kohler engines in their mowers, and if is anything like the Kohler I have in my 1970's Cub Cadet, it has been trouble free and very dependable. I think I would seriously look at the belting arrangements for the mower and go what seemed to be the simplest. I'd get a cast iron front axle with regreasable fittings on tractor and mower. And if I could afford it, I'd go with a direct drive and stay away from the belt driven tractors. Other than that it all comes down to preference, cause I don't think the rest of the feature are too much different. Just my opinion.

I don"t have experience with their mower, but I do have a newer Troybuilt rototiller.
It is not the high caliper machine that Troybuilt used to have a reputation for. The quality is not there anymore.
