Started '53 Jubilee after it had sat (covered, outside) for 3 weeks. During and after warm up, exhaust was dark, more black than blue. Lots of moisture in air (wet snow was on ground) and I did wipe off distributor, wires, etc. Smokey exhaust continued after fully warm, not as much at higher engine speeds but still more than usual. Pulled plugs, not wet but dirty/black. Prior to this, exhaust has had little color / blow by. Would you suspect bad spark/wet electrical or carb? I had slowed idle speed to 450 -475 three weeks ago when installing new proofmeter. Had to adjust idle air screw also to get smoother running at idle rpm. Ran ok but weather was warmer and drier back then. Thanks for ideas/input. Tim

Carb tinkering aside ask yer self what would cause incomplete combustion.

either to much fuel in the cylinder that inhibits complete combustion

or

other factors that would inhibit complete combustion even if the mix were correct.

i would first confirm the engine were achieving operating temp.

I would confirm the choke did in fact come completely off.

Incomplete combustion of the mix is normal on a cold engine,,, its just the way it is cuzz,,, its just not possible to do a complete burn of the gases in most engines even hot.

The mixer (carb) can not do its job if other systems are out of whack,,, confirm those first then fudge with the mixer.

Asked this question the other day

Whats the last thang you do (adjustment) when tune'n a engine

Got no takers

WARNING  all I know I read on the Internet,,, do it enuff and you can become a guru also,,, not responsible for damages,,, I read it and just pass it along,,, proceed with caution

Sorry forddoc, I meant to let you know that I did check the air cleaner. (initially to look for critters, etc.) Removed a bit of oil from cup. At full line, it just seemed too full and I reduced it to just below that line. Thanks for your help. Tim

Thanks to all of you. I hope to get back to tractor this weekend and check things out. Dell, thank you for the carb adjustment tips. I'll be sure I set idle air screw for fastest rpm not smoothest. I saw one of your other posts and it sounds like Imay need to adjust, adjust again, and re-adjust .... to get it right. Jerry, I did check spark, but will re-do test to be sure it is good/strong. And the tap on the carb may be in order after all. Tim

Pull a plug wir off, put a pare clip in it and hold it near a good ground. TTurn on the ignition adn try a start. You should have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, the color of lightning. If you have tha,t your ignition is performing properly and the problem is an overly rich mixture. It could be a hung float or improper float adjustment or just an adjustment on the carb. Since it just started, it"s more probably a hung float or adjustments. Rap the side of the carb with a block of wood and if that clears up the problem you know it was most likely a hung float. if it doesn"t chek the adjustments.

Tim.......you write......"Pulled plugs, not wet but dirty/black------Had to adjust idle air screw also to get smoother running at idle rpm"......Yep, yer runnin' RICH.......adjust yer side-pointing idlemix screw for FASTEST idle, NOT SMOOTHEST idle. Understand?

Remember yer side-pointing idlemix is BASSACKWARDS; out for lean, IN for ENRICH. My side-pointing idlemix is usually in the 1/4-turn ballpark. The down-pointing MAINJET is usually about 2-turns. It is probably the one that is causing yer BLACK sparkies .......Dell

Sounds to me like a carb issue...running rich...a little dirt or gunk in a mixture port or the jet. Weak spark usually results in missing or stalling under load.

Thanks. I was thinking carb also. No stalling or missing while I had it running. Did not operate it under much of a load though. I may have got some gunk loosened up while making idle adjustments, etc.
