I just purchased an 8N over the weekend. My first tractor really. However the lady sold it to me as is. It starts and runs fine. I just don't know of any good references for parts, questions, etc. For example I noticed the the hydraulic works when I lift the shredder but slowly drops. I don't know if it has the wrong fluid? I noticed a 5 gallon hydraulic fluid next to the tractor I believe it read 20-40. I just read online it should be 90. So now I will start there thinking it's the fluid and not the pump? I also don't know what kind of links or bars should be in the rear of the tractor? Air filter looks does not look complete? There is a cover on the hood? Don't know if it's modified or missing parts. These are just one of many examples I'm trying to resolve. This is all a learning experience for me. Any suggetions?

Welcome. These folks know N's and then some. I'm a newbie also and the people on this site have been extremely helpful with my '53 NAA. Follow their advice, browse the archives, etc. and you'll be fine. The amount of experience and willingness to share info is great. Good luck and thanks to all who help us through this site. Tim

I have dealt with all those guys listed below. Usually real good luck with Jim Bills but a couple of months ago, he quoted me a price on a 9N rim and he never got back to me with a total price including shipping.I emailed him numerous times and got no response. It was like he fell off the face of the earth. Good luck.John Smith will not sell you junk.Might want to stay away from --well won"t go there..One used parts seller sold me a 9N front rim that was priced high but it was not a first quality used rim. I made it work but it was not what it should have been.HTH

My recommendations on manuals are in tip # 39. As to hydraulic fluid, check out tips 3 & 4. Follow Soundguy's advice on the troubleshooting. I go by the 5 minute rule.....if it leaks down in less than 5 minutes, I worry about it!

Take some time & read the info on John Smith's site. It's first rate.

Regarding parts, these guys usually have a good selection of used parts:

Jim Bills jimnjen3ATearthlink.net

Jim Webb jwwebb1155ATaol.com

John Smith smith8NATatt.net

Replace the AT in the address w/ @

For new parts, try this site or Just8N's. A few of us haven't had good luck w/ N parts from TSC. NAPA carries a lot of parts as well.

When you ask specific questions about your N, it’s usually a good idea to tell us:

1. The model of your tractor (2N, 9N, 8N, NAA, etc).

2. If it is 6v or 12v.

3. If it’s an N, if the distributor is on the front or side of the engine.

4. If it has any major parts that are not OEM, such as electronic ignition, a side coil on a front distributor, etc.

Troubleshooting is different depending on the model of the tractor, voltage, ignition system & distributor placement.

And, even if you told us that last week, remember that you’re dealing w/ a bunch of guys w/ CRS.

Check out the pictures on John Smith's website regarding your other questions. And do buy the manuals!

Post back w/ any questions.

You should buy an FO-4 manual for it, can get it lots of places (this site, TSC, most tractor dealerships).

There are several things that can cause leakdown on the hydraulics, wrong fluid is one of them. Most of these tractors have leakdown to one degree or another, usually its not much of a problem, the hydraulic pump will keep the load up as long as the pto is turning.

At a minimum, you will want an owners manual, a service manual and a master parts catalog.

I like the I&T fo-4 after market service manual.. it's good for most issue you as a newbie will need to handle.

The rear lift can use the 90w mineral gar oil.. or the newer UTF oils meeting the M2C134D spec. IF it had some other oil..like a 20w50 or 10w40 engine oil.. don't worry.. nothing will blow up. While a thinner oil may amplify the effects of a leak... if the lift drops.. it's likey not the oil's fault.. it more likely a worn set of rings on the lift piston, or a scored/worn lift cyl.

you can lift a heavy weight and remove the dipstick inspection cover and look up/in with a flashlight ( keep hands out of there )... and look for a stream of oil fromt he mouth of the cyl.

also.. this forum you have found.. you can think of it as a 24/7 technical support hotline.. we all speak 'merican and some even type well ( not me so much! ).. if it's an N problem.. it's probably happene dto one of us here 300 times.. so you can get help here.

Welcome to the forum. This is a great reference source. You will also find the owners manual and the I&T FO4 manual (both sold on this site) very helpful. Also helpful would be John Smith's website and Bruce's 50 tips. Not a day goes by without Bruce posting a link to his tips so I'll let you scroll around and you'll find it for sure.
