1948 -8N Ford, all original, 6 volt ets. Hydrualic lift will come up and then "kick out" and go back down, with or without an implement on the lift. Took off the lift cover, followed the Ford shop manual, made sure all the springs were the right length, rod is not bent, etc. Looks to me like nothing was ever touched here. Took the pump out and took it to an old Ford mechanic and had it rebuilt. Put pump back in the tractor, same problem. (I realize rebuild kits aren't always perfect and parts can fail). With the inspection cover off both sides, the pump runs fine however, when it gets to the top, it will kick out and the lift will drop. What am I missing? |

"Regular drop rate" sounds like the Exhaust control valve is being opened by the linkage, then, because if it were just a leak, it would likely drop slower (seconds to minutes) unless it turned out to be a gigantic leak, in which case it might never lift.
What about a lift to say half of all the way up? Will it hold that position (small lever vertical/position control? |

That is probably more reason to believe that linkage is a problem, as in "It should only back away from the pump enough to close the INTAKE Control valve BUT NOT enough to open the EXHAUST Control valve." However, you didn't describe the rate of fall. Your words, "kick out" suggest a fall as in a normal lift would if lever moved to 'down' as opposed to a slow leak down.
If quick fall vs slow, then once again look to linkage.

I'm with Zane in betting on something mechanical vs a leak. Take right inspection port off and watch control rod at pump Control valves when this "kick out" occurs. It should only back away from the pump enough to close the INTAKE Control valve BUT NOT enough to open the EXHAUST Control valve. You may be able to modulate this with your hand on control rod. |

| | Does the touch control handl fall when the lift falls????? If so the friction disc need to be tightened or replaced on the quadrant. It is possible that the cam follower pin is work off and dropping off the cam when it reaches the top of it's travel and the picks it up again when the touch control handle is lowered. Also the link that holds the pin can be bent or worn so at the pivot point that it can't stay on the cam. Zane |

| Need to remove the right inspection port and look in when running and see where the leak is when it falls back down. Most likely causes would be 1) cylinder leak, 2) relieve valve bad, 3)crack in pump, 4)blown gasket. |
