If the adjustment on the back of the generator will not reduce the output to a low level, something is not right and it is NOTHING to do with the cutout (round can thing). There is an adjustment on most third brush generators that sets the MAIN BRUSH assembly to neutral point. Essentially the third brush adjustment (screwdriver slot thing on the back) should be set to zero and then a full battery voltage is applied to the generator with the belt OFF of it. The 3rd brush is then lifted and the main brush assembly is loosened and rotated until the armature can"t decide to spin clockwise (CW) or counter clockwise (CCW). Once that spot is found, the main brush is then tightened in that position and the third brush is then lowered back in contact with the armature and you should then get normal adjustment range of the control.Hope this helps. |
