I still have the old 6v system. When i picked up tractor the previous owner had it set up as - ground, when it was running the ammeter bounced between 0 & -5, I swapped it around to a + ground then the ammeter read +10 at full speed, I adjusted the control (high low) on the genny, dropped a little bit, but i toasted an $80.00 6v battery. any glues in which direction I should go with this. Prior to switching from - to + ground I did repoloraize genny per bruces 50 tips. A bit long winded, hope someone can help, thanks

If the adjustment on the back of the generator will not reduce the output to a low level, something is not right and it is NOTHING to do with the cutout (round can thing). There is an adjustment on most third brush generators that sets the MAIN BRUSH assembly to neutral point. Essentially the third brush adjustment (screwdriver slot thing on the back) should be set to zero and then a full battery voltage is applied to the generator with the belt OFF of it. The 3rd brush is then lifted and the main brush assembly is loosened and rotated until the armature can"t decide to spin clockwise (CW) or counter clockwise (CCW). Once that spot is found, the main brush is then tightened in that position and the third brush is then lowered back in contact with the armature and you should then get normal adjustment range of the control.

Hope this helps.

rluscomb said: (quoted from post at 19:06:51 10/29/09) Sorry for the delay, the genny has only one (1) terminal and the cut out is round with One (1) wire on top and the other on the bottom
Like all the others said, put a voltmeter on the battery & turn the HI/LO adjust down. My experience has been that you can adjust those very low.

If you find out that the HI/LO adjust does nothing, there is a long shot that someone put a modified generator on your tractor. I will explain further after you tell me how many terminals are on your generator. If it is a one terminal generator, then I would be wasting time to keep typing, but if 3-terminal, I will type more.

So how many terminals? And does it use cut-out (small round can with 2 terminals) or a VR (~2" x 3"rectangle can w/3 or 4 terminals)?

Positive ground will result in slightly better ignition so that's the way to go. Dennis Carpeter sells a solid state voltage regulator that looks like a cutout. It will keep your battery from overcharging. Kind of pricey compared to a mechanical cutout but so are batteries.

I have a 41 9n and had to adjust the third brush on the back of the gen all the way as nlow as it would go to get it to cut out after 4-5 minutes of running, otherwise it would keep putting out 7-1/2to8v until I could hear the battery boiling.---lha

what can you do to reduce that, does the ceramic ballast (resistor) have anything to do with it? dont have a key switch, use normal two posistion switch. any advice is greatly appreciated

the dial, ( 3rd brush) controls the charge rate.. ceramic resistor is for ignition. they have nothing in common.

Re: 9N charging issue????? in reply to rluscomb, 10-29-2009 12:01:21
rluscomb......you ask......"does the ceramic ballast (resistor) have anything to do with it?".......NO!!! the "infamous ballast resistor" has 'nuttin' to do with the battery charging system; ONLY the squarecan ignition coil is effected by the ballast resistor, which can be controlled either by 2-terminal keyed ignition switch ...or... enny SPST toggle switch.

So NO; yer 2-terminal roundcan cut-out mounted on the steering column underneath the rusty sheetmetal battery tray controls (disconnects) the 1-terminal 3rd-brush genny when you turn yer engine OFF. It does NOT regulate yer genny charge. ONLY the 3rd-brush that YOU manually adjust on the BACK of yer genny plate controls the charge into yer 6-volt battery.

Too high a charge (3rd-brush) will BOIL yer battery water and WARP yer battery plates. And you'll be buying a new battery. ......Dell
