I'm having trouble getting my 9N to start. I've had to jump start it off and on throughout the summer. I pulled it into the garsge to charge the battery, after a few hours I tried to start and the solinoid would just click! Went and bought a new battery and starter solinoid. Installed both, and now the starter engages but tractor won't start. I've been reading the fourums and am now looking at the coil. I did notice that the ignition resistor is broke in half. Would that cause the no spark problem that I'm having? |

I've had all conections from the battery to the starter solinoid and starter on and off ( all tight and clean ) I will recheck. If I'm getting no spark how can I tell if its the coil. When I put a meter on it I get 0.07. Is that good or bad? |
Earlier you made it sound as if absolutely nothing happened when you tried to start it as in, "I just tried jumping the two wires on the resistor. It turned over but did not start. I took the jump wire off and now I get nothing when I try to start. What did I break now?".
So, to help us along in diagnostics, what did you do/change to progress from "I get nothing" to "I'm getting no spark, how can I tell if it is the coil", which must mean that you have progressed from "nothing" to it at least spins now, otherwise how would you know you have no spark?
So, what was change from "nothing" to the present where the starter now spins the engine?
Words are cheap...tell us all you can. |

| First, thank you all for responding. Originally after changing the battery and starter solinoid I tried to start the tractor. It turned over but did not act like it would start. Normally the tractor takes right off. I pulled a spark plug, held it against the block and engaged the strater. I saw no spark. I thought the next thing in line would be the coil. I did pull the coil but saw nothing out of the ordinary. So i put it back on. After reading through these forums, someone mentioned the ballistor resistor. Thats when I started to look in that direction. I must have broke it when I was checking connections on the back of the ignition switch. I will need to buy a new on and install it. I have taken the hood off so I can see everything and am now in the process of checking, tightening all connections from the switch to the coil. I"m not sure what to look for in regards to the coil or points. As you can tell I"m not a mechanic. Thanks again for all the suggestions. |

Look for loose, dirty connections. The starter circuits have nothing to do with ignition circuits. Separate animals. Either will work without the other. |

Jumper across it (that is bypass it) and see if it will start. You don't want to run it more than a few minutes this way as it may damage the coil due to too much current and overheating, but it is a good OK test. |
