On a restored and working 8N, from routine shifting from Low to Reverse repeatedly, the shift lever where it is in contact with the shifting rails, has worn to a point where the transmission locks up in first gear and the shift lever moves freely into the neutral position.

I have taken the top cover off this tractor and I have removed the shift lever from the top cover. I can see major wear and rounding off of the corners of the shift lever where it contacts the shifting rails.

I do have access to a bone yard of 8N's but in the past 8N's I have I have restored, I have seen this kind of wear on almost all 8N transmissions I have had apart. I hate to start removing shift covers and finding more worn out levers. I can only assume that the transmission shift levers on the bone yard transmissions will show similar wear.

Is there a machine shop fix for this problem?

Anyone had luck fixing worn shift levers?

If not,

Is there an aftermarket source for a new shift lever?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

Hey Jim,

It is the square cut on the shift lever that is worn. There are two square cuts, mine is the upper square cut that is almost worn to nothing.

I am going to try a weld and file operation. If that doesn't work, I might be interested in another shift lever. I will let you know.

I do have access to five bone yard 8N's that I might find a healthy donor from.

Thanks,

Dean

Here is a photo of the shift gates on the underside of a transmission cover pulled from a 1948 8N. You see? There are some good ones out there. This one is sold and gone, but I still had the photo so I thought I'd show it to you to give you hope.

Also, a question: Is it the shift gates that are worn out or the shift lever square section, or both. I may have a good shift lever. I have another top cover with bad shift gates. If the lever itself is good, it would be available.
