12 V conversion

Just got my 12V conversion kit for an 8N side mount distributor from YT. I didn't read what was included closely enough and expected a voltmeter to replace the old ammeter. Can I just use the ammeter? (Run the wire through the loops and then tie the wires together that would be connected to the same post on a voltmeter?) Would the original generator (rebuilt a few years ago), working ammeter, and possibly working original (I think) voltage regulator be worth much to a collector? (I did not make the decision to convert....I"m just labor)

Thanks

ure there is a demand for that old hardware. Every time one shows up on e-bay it sells, often at more than I would pay! Sean was looking for one this week. He found one. Voltmeters connect ground on one terminal and battery voltage on the other. Ammeters either utilize the loop to sense magnetic field around the wire caused by current flow or they are the two terminal wired type with one terminal to battery (usually via start sw/solenoid battery side connection) and the other terminal connects to all loads plus alternator output.
