12v coil conversion

I am converting a few of the N"s over to 12v . I got an electronic pick up in one of them and love it but hate the flat plate they sell in the conversion .

I took some pics of the square coil I converted for a round can coil & points . I used most of Hobo"s method but wanted to have a nipple for the spark plug wire .( I don"t know why , I just did , he he ) I experimented with a few different size spark plugs but I didn"t like the size , how to mount them , and the fact that soldier doesn"t like to stick to the electrode .

I cut one electrode from of a ford distributor cap , soldiered it all up , cut a wooden wedge and epoxied the guts so nothing rotates or can slide back in the hole. It is short enough that the bail swings over it if I want to remove it while it is still on the motor .

I did find out that all of the terminals , the pig tail & flat spring on bottom as well as the threaded electrical stud on top have a hole with a wire soldiered in them . The pig tail is actually soldiered into a cup that has a small hole .

I was able to remove all of the original wires and drill slightly larger holes for the new bigger wire .

I am going to do another coil with two terminals on top for the electronic system because it needs power to the reader that replaced the points . I"ll see if I can remember to snap some pics of all the parts disassembled .

Thanks Hobo for doing most of my homework for me - Ken(Ark)

That ought to 'get 'er done!

Along those lines but different:
coil_different_hog_out.jpg

As I recall, he was modifying the hog out to get rid of the HV connection to center of distributor cap shown (to be replaced w/ std cap)

Apparently my two wires on top were too close togeather after running it for 6 months in salt air it developed a HV arc between the two terminals inside and was a real bugger to find.
I took a new ford dist. and cut one of the terminals off and JB'd it into the cap.
