What is the easiest and quickest way to tell the difference betweena 12 and 6 volrt setup on a 8n?

uh, well, count the filler caps on the battery

pull a lamp or two and check the lamp numbers

check the numbers on the regulator/ generator

If it has an alternator it is PROBABLY 12V

Count the caps on the battery. A 12v battery has 6 caps & a 6v has 3. If it has an alternator instead of a generator, chances are 99 out of 100 it's 12v. (I'm aware of 2 N's w/ 6v alternators)

counting the fill caps works some of the time. unfortunately many late batteries no longer have any fill caps. some have ganged caps, three cells to the cap. in case of doubt you can always call a real auto parts store with the make and number of the battery.

a volt meter is the only reliable method and if the battery is discharged you can"t even bet on that.
