12 volt generator/regulator question

After reading Bruce (VA)'s post below (what else can be said about the subject?) I was wondering if anyone ever tried to use a Volkwagen 12-volt generator on an N? Most of the later VW bug (pre--74) and early bus (pre-71)generators (before they converted to alternators) had the regulator mounted right on the top of the generator. The generators are of sufficient capacity to run about anything you would want to put on a tractor. The problems I see would be:
1. The method of mounting because they used what amounted to a cast aluminum saddle mount and heavy duty hose style clamp (maybe a bracket made from a segment of matching pipe would work).

2. The pully is metric and would have to be changed to match to crank pulley.

Just wondering.

Dell, don't get on me about using German crap on an N. If it's sacreligious, my wife will get me anyway!

Jim.......en spraken zee BMW und VW diesel. But WHY? 12v alternators with built-in regulators are $20 used and checked out at the junqueyard. Rebuilt's are $35 guaranteed at the autoparts store. VW gennys are $100+ and are NOT EFFICIENT like alternators. Iff'n yer looking fer "stealth" 12v genny, think '60 Ford Falcon.

Me? iff'n I ever converted my eazy starting 6-volt 52-8N to 12v, I'd be thinking rice-rocket NipponDenso, just like Ford/New-Holland Boomers do now. .......Dell, a 12v advocate for the right reasons

If I wanted a 12v genny on a ford N.. I'd either rebuild the 6v genny as 12v.. or grav a 12v genny from a 01 diesel model, and then retrofit it.
