12 volt system and Alternator/fried stator and regulator

Somebody convertd this 8N that I have to 12 volts and used an alternator. It was not charging so I took it in to get if fixed. The Voltage regular was fried. On the test machine it put out 80 volts!!!!! Examination of the stator showed it had really really gotten hot. What the initial installer did was to bunch the two leads coming out of the alternator and ran a wire to the battery....That did it...fried the regulator...then a run away alternator cooked the stator.

be careful.

"What the initial installer did was to bunch the two leads coming out of the alternator and ran a wire to the battery....That did it...fried the regulator.."

And it would fail because..........................?

You are asking me? I am a lawyer. :) and, I am parroting what the fellow at the alternator shop said. So, I do not know why.

Thank you. That does actually explain it. (That's a comment on the alt shop guy.) I know you lawyers already catch enough.

What Jmor is saying is that on a standard delco 10si or similar model, the charge wire, and the 1/2 plug can all be common with the battery when the machine is running. When you shut her off. IF you can get the machine to shut off, the 31 wire will drain the battery eventually.

None of these should specifically cook the alternator.. unless the drianed battery ituation caused a jump start.. and / or a bigg battery charger with a large start feature... that may have been a tad unkind to the vreg.. and then the alt left charging the dead battery would have been unkind to the unit as well.

Previous to that though.. if she was left to drain down, then the alt had to constantly recharge a drained battery.. that may have been what killed her.
