while grading the drive my ammetter went to discharging, checked all the usual,batt.,gauge,alternator. the alternator is bad.took it off was going to replace it but from what i can gather its prestolite ALE-520x,the last digit in the number could be 1or a 4 cant tell, pretty beat up.i cant find another alt. to replace it.im thinking of converting to 1 wire delco alt. now.this prestolite is 2 wire ,can i use the same wiring or do i order a harness for the new alternator?

Looks like it may be a marine alternator. One wire will be heavy gage & go to battery via direct, ammeter, or at starter switch/solenoid. Where does the other wire connect? Also, is there an external regulator or is reg built into the alternator? The other wire might go to a regulator?
It should be easy, I believe, to make the change

JMOR ,the regulator is built in,the other wire small diameter gos to the ground.i did some checking online and you are correct its a marine alternator.i think im just gonna get me a new harness for the 1 wire and make up some brackets.after looking at it today a bit the wiring is pretty cobbled up and it will make me a little more confident in the wiring that way. thanks for the help

These are so simple, you are probably better off making your own harness. If you buy one ready made, I recommend you connect it using my diagram (for which ever tractor you have) or another good diagram, because some of the diagrams I've seen with alternator/harness kits are terrible to just plain wrong. If you don't want to replace your harness, it sounds like the alt swap is a direct wire job...same as what you have. At any rate, I would swap alternators first to see that all works well, then swap harness if you want a new one, because if you do both at the same time and something does not work, then you don't know where to look. I lkie one change at a time!

Joe......enny time you have suspected alternator problems, take it in to an autoparts store for a "free" check-out. Seriously.

Howsomevers, a "sudden" change in electrical performance ie...ammeter, usually means LOOSE CONNECTION or broken wire. Check'em out!!!

And NO...you can NOT buy ready made 12v wiring harness 'cuz there are many different ways to convert to 12v and a gazzillion ways to do it wrong. And unfortunately, even the fabled I&T FO-4 manual does NOT have enny 12v conversion info so yer on yer own.

MAKE A PICTORIAL DRAWING (on big brown paper grocery bag so you have lottsa room to write words) of what you have BEFORE you touch a single wire. Understand??? or I'smacka yer knuckles, eh? .......Dell, a 12v advocate for the right reason that knows 8-ways to do it right and they all work

JMOR,im going to fab up some brackets tonight and mount the altenator if the pully matches.i think i will make my own harness i have abunch of connectors with shrink tube and about 40 foot of wire left over from a trailer wiring.i will look in the archives for youre diagram for my 1952 8N .i really appreciate the help thank you again

DELL, i had autozone check out the alt. and its bad. im gonna go out right now and draw me up what i got before i start anything else so i dont screw something up.its a 1952 8n sidemount, ive already had a couple cans of happiness today so i might be inclined to miss something if i dont write/draw it all out first, thank you for the help

I am not familiar with that alt, but if there are screws in it so you can split it , I would take it apart & find out why it quit. Maybe it just needs brushes.
